1. Technology overview
MotherDuck is a cloud data platform company founded in 2022 by Jordan Tigani, a former lead engineer on Google BigQuery, together with engineers from AWS, Databricks and Snowflake, working closely with DuckDB Labs, the creator of the open-source DuckDB engine. The company built a serverless data warehouse on top of DuckDB to address the high cost and latency that small and mid-sized data teams face with traditional cloud warehouses.
The platform lets teams query data stored in S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure without a separate ingestion step, using a hybrid execution model that runs light workloads locally and heavier ones in the cloud. Core modules include Dives for shareable interactive visualizations, Flights for scheduled data pipelines, and a Model Context Protocol server that connects AI agents directly to stored data. Customers include SaaS companies building customer-facing analytics and finance or operations teams that need self-serve reporting.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Serverless DuckDB warehouse: Runs analytical queries on a managed instance called a Duckling.
2. Direct cloud storage query: Reads data from S3, GCS and Azure Blob Storage without a separate load step.
3. Dives: Lets users create and share interactive data visualizations from query results.
4. Flights: Schedules recurring data transformation and pipeline jobs inside the warehouse.
5. MCP server for AI agents: Connects AI agents directly to stored data with isolated, predictable query costs.
6. Hybrid execution: Splits workloads between local DuckDB instances and cloud compute to cut latency and cost.
One platform connecting startups, corporations, research institutions, regions and investors
