1. Technology overview
TigerData, formerly known as Timescale, is a database company founded in 2015 that created TimescaleDB, an open-source extension that lets PostgreSQL handle large-scale time-series and machine data. The company rebranded to TigerData in 2025 while keeping the underlying TimescaleDB product and its Postgres foundation unchanged.
The platform adds automatic time- and key-based partitioning, hybrid row-and-columnar storage, and tiered storage that keeps recent data on fast disks and older data in object storage, alongside more than 200 built-in SQL functions for time-series analytics and lakehouse integration with Kafka, S3 and Iceberg. It ships as open-source TimescaleDB, a managed cloud service called Tiger Cloud, and an enterprise on-premises edition, and is used by organizations such as CERN and Speedcast.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Automatic partitioning: Splits time-series tables by time and key automatically to keep queries fast at scale.
2. Hybrid storage engine: Combines row storage for fast writes with columnar storage for analytical queries.
3. Tiered storage: Keeps recent data on fast disks and ages older data out to lower-cost object storage.
4. Lakehouse integration: Connects to Kafka, Amazon S3 and Apache Iceberg for broader data pipelines.
5. Built-in time-series SQL functions: Provides more than 200 functions for gap-filling, downsampling and trend analysis.
6. Deployment flexibility: Available as open-source TimescaleDB, managed Tiger Cloud, or an on-premises enterprise edition.
