1. Technology overview
SML Group, based in Hong Kong with a presence in more than 20 countries, supplies retail brands with labels, RFID tags and inventory software. It addresses the poor inventory visibility that causes stockouts, over-stocking and shrink across factories, distribution centres and stores.
The Clarity platform records events for each RFID-tagged item: tag printing and encoding at the factory, carton packing and outbound checks, inbound verification at distribution centres and inventory counts in stores. It works with handheld, fixed and portal readers from Impinj, Zebra and other partners, using GS1 EPC standards. Clarity runs on single-tenant Azure cloud with on-premise options, and Clarity Store is used in more than 60 countries by retailers such as Uniqlo, Nordstrom and PVH.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Factory encoding: RFID tags are printed and encoded at the factory and linked to each item.
- Pack and ship: Carton packing and outbound checks are verified by RFID reads.
- DC receiving: Inbound shipments are checked against expected contents at distribution centres.
- Store inventory: Clarity Store supports cycle counts, replenishment and loss detection.
- Hardware ecosystem: Handheld, fixed and portal readers from Impinj, Zebra and partners are supported.
- Integration: ERP, WMS, POS and e-commerce systems connect via HTTPS, MQTT, webhooks and SDK.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese garment factories can encode RFID tags and verify cartons before export to brands using Clarity. Third-party logistics providers can speed up receiving at distribution centres. Domestic fashion retail chains can improve store stock accuracy for online and offline sales.
4. Benefits
Item-level RFID makes it possible to count and verify cartons without opening them, speeding up factory dispatch and DC receiving. Store teams gain accurate stock data that supports omnichannel fulfilment. One vendor supplies tags, encoding, readers and software, simplifying rollout across suppliers. GS1 EPC identifiers keep data interoperable with partners.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Global apparel retailers are extending item-level RFID from stores back to source factories, and digital product passport rules add pressure to identify each garment. Vietnam is a leading apparel and footwear exporter, so manufacturers are increasingly required to apply and encode RFID tags before shipment.
6. Other information
SML Group is based in Hong Kong and present in more than 20 countries, describing a four-decade history. Its Vietnamese entity, SML Vietnam Co., Ltd., operates a label plant at VSIP II, Binh Duong. In November 2025 FountainVest and CPE joined as new shareholders.
