1. Technology overview
Pacifical B.V. is a Netherlands-registered tuna verification and traceability company, originally a joint venture of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) island nations and Sustunable B.V. It does not fish, process or sell tuna; it verifies and traces MSC-certified tuna from PNA waters for supply chain partners.
Through the SmarTuna platform, fisheries authorities issue a digital trip code, onboard observers send catch data via satellite, and data is complemented by VMS, AIS and regional fisheries databases. Processors link lot numbers to the trip, and buyers scan a QR code or enter the can code to see vessel, fishing area, catch date and processing. Pacifical adds mass balance checks, chain-of-custody audits and lot-level proof-point reporting, and shares data under GDST.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Digital trip code: Authorities issue a code for each fishing trip.
- Satellite data: Observer, VMS and AIS data feed verification.
- Lot linking: Processors attach lot numbers to the trip.
- Consumer lookup: QR or can code shows vessel, area and dates.
- Assurance: Mass balance checks and chain-of-custody audits.
- GDST exchange: Shares data with partners under GDST.
3. Potential application
- A Vietnamese tuna canner processing MSC PNA tuna and linking lots to fishing trips. 2) A seafood exporter supplying European retailers that require GDST data. 3) A fisheries authority studying digital trip codes for its own fleet.
4. Benefits
- Lot-level evidence links each can to a fishing trip and vessel. 2) Verification before shipment reduces the risk of illegal or non-compliant catch. 3) GDST-based data sharing eases exchange with retailers. 4) Consumers can check origin by QR or can code.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Retailers and regulators expect tuna to be traceable to the vessel and verified free of IUU fishing, and GDST is becoming a common data language for seafood. Southeast Asian tuna processors, including those in Vietnam, that handle MSC tuna may need to plug into such verification schemes.
6. Other information
Based in the Netherlands; Managing Director Henk Brus. Covers free-school tuna and, since 2024, FAD-caught tuna in the PNA MSC fishery. Piloting GDST traceability for shrimp and crab. Partners include John West Australia.
