1. Technology overview
NEU Battery Materials is a Singapore-based company led by CEO Bryan Oh and CTO Kenneth Palmer. It focuses on recycling lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a fast-growing chemistry whose low metal value makes conventional recycling less economical.
Its patented redox-targeting electrochemical process takes in black mass, extracts lithium and produces lithium hydroxide and hydrogen. The modular stack of anodic tank, electrolyzer and cathodic tank uses regenerative reagents with no acids or heat, consuming water and little electricity without requiring wastewater treatment. NEU accepts end-of-life LFP batteries, other lithium batteries, black mass and cell production scrap, and returns recovered material to cell manufacturing. Partners include battery makers, e-mobility and storage firms and e-waste recyclers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Redox-targeting extraction: patented electrochemical process designed for LFP batteries.
- Lithium hydroxide output: recovers lithium as lithium hydroxide together with hydrogen.
- Acid-free chemistry: regenerative reagents with no acids, no heat and no wastewater treatment.
- Modular stacks: anodic tank, electrolyzer and cathodic tank modules that scale with demand.
- Broad feedstock acceptance: takes end-of-life LFP, other lithium batteries, black mass and production scrap.
- Collection logistics: logistics support for battery take-back through partner networks.
3. Potential application
Battery pack assemblers and cell makers in Vietnam can send production scrap and black mass for lithium recovery. Electric motorbike and EV fleet operators can set up take-back of retired LFP packs. Operators of battery energy storage systems at solar farms and factories can plan end-of-life recycling for their LFP containers.
4. Benefits
The process avoids acids and high temperatures and needs no wastewater treatment, lowering environmental and permitting burden. Battery makers can recover battery-grade lithium from production scrap and return it to cell manufacturing. The modular design lets capacity grow with feedstock volumes. Logistics support through partner networks simplifies collection of end-of-life batteries.
5. Market trends & opportunities
LFP is taking a growing share of EV and energy storage batteries, and large volumes will reach end of life in the coming years. Lithium supply risk and new battery regulations, such as EU recycled content rules from 2027, push manufacturers to secure recycled lithium. Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, is expanding EV, e-motorbike and storage deployments that will need local recycling routes.
6. Other information
Based in Singapore, led by CEO Bryan Oh and CTO Kenneth Palmer. Commissioned a 1,300-tonne-per-year recycling facility in Singapore and in October 2026 closed an oversubscribed USD 7.6 million round co-led by Shift4Good and SGInnovate. Backers and partners shown on its site include Enterprise Singapore, ComfortDelGro and Paragon. Signed an MOU with SLEEK EV in September 2026 for battery management and recycling in Southeast Asia.
