1. Technology overview

Pismo is a cloud-native banking and card issuing platform that became part of Visa when Visa completed its acquisition in January 2024. It serves tier 1 banks, large retailers and neobanks that want to launch or modernise accounts, cards and payments without running a legacy mainframe core.

The API platform covers core banking for new or modernised banks, credit, debit and prepaid card issuing on Visa, Mastercard and private label, digital wallets for buyers and sellers, digital lending with booking, disbursement and auto-repayment, multi-country corporate banking accounts and seller management with reconciliation and fees. Clients range from Itau and BTG Pactual in Brazil to Citi Treasury and Trade Solutions and Australian card issuers.

2. Highlighted features & specifications

  • Core banking: Provides account and ledger services for new banks and legacy modernisation.
  • Card issuing: Issues credit, debit and prepaid cards, including virtual and one-time cards.
  • Digital wallets: Manages balances and transfers for both buyers and sellers.
  • Digital lending: Handles loan booking, disbursement, auto-repayment and returns.
  • Corporate banking: Runs multi-country, multi-branch demand deposit accounts for companies.
  • Seller management: Processes merchant transactions, reconciliation, statements and fees.

3. Potential application

A Vietnamese bank could launch a new credit card line with virtual cards on cloud issuer processing. A consumer finance company could run instalment loans and co-branded cards with a retailer. An e-commerce platform could offer seller wallets with automated reconciliation.

4. Benefits

Banks can replace or sidecar legacy cores with cloud APIs and launch card and account products faster. Pismo cites Itau achieving a 31% IT cost reduction and a 98% decrease in system failures. The platform has been SOC 2 compliant since July 2025.

6. Other information

Acquired by Visa for about USD 1 billion, with the deal announced in June 2023 and completed in January 2024; the brand continues as Pismo, a Visa company. Opened a Singapore office as its Southeast Asia hub in April 2022 and entered Thailand through T2P in September 2025. SOC 2 compliant since July 2025. Founding year not stated on the fetched pages.
