1. Technology overview
PowerX is a Japanese battery storage company founded in March 2021 by Masahiro Ito, headquartered with a factory in Tamano City, Okayama, and with a second factory in Hokkaido and offices in Tokyo. It manufactures stationary grid batteries and EV charging equipment in Japan to give businesses more stable and flexible energy options.
Its Hypercharger is an ultrafast EV charger with a built-in battery of 179 or 358 kWh that stores electricity, often off-peak, and releases it to vehicles. Running from a 50 kVA three-phase low-voltage connection, it delivers up to 150 or 240 kW in boost mode and 120 kW continuous per dispenser, avoiding high-voltage installation work. CHAdeMO is standard with NACS or CCS2 options, the Pro model supports bidirectional V2X, and the battery also enables peak shaving, solar self-consumption and backup power during outages. Deployments include Audi, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz sites, Narita Airport, taxi and gas company fleets and roadside stations.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Battery buffer: 179 kWh (Compact) or 358 kWh (Standard and Pro) integrated storage.
- Ultrafast output: up to 240 kW boost and 120 kW continuous per dispenser, with two dispensers.
- Low-voltage connection: runs from a 50 kVA three-phase 200 V or 400 V supply.
- Connectors: CHAdeMO 2.0.2 certified, with NACS or CCS2 options.
- Bidirectional V2X: Pro model supports vehicle-to-everything energy exchange.
- Energy and resilience: peak shaving, solar self-consumption and standalone backup mode during outages.
3. Potential application
Car dealerships in Vietnam can install ultrafast chargers without building a dedicated transformer station. Taxi and ride-hailing fleets can charge quickly at depots while shifting energy use to off-peak hours. Highway rest stops and resorts with weak grid connections can offer fast charging with backup power for outages.
4. Benefits
Sites can offer ultrafast charging from a 50 kVA low-voltage connection, avoiding the cost and delay of high-voltage grid upgrades. The battery shifts consumption to off-peak hours and cuts peak demand, lowering electricity bills. In outages the unit switches to standalone mode to power selected circuits for business continuity, and PowerX advertises a warranty of more than 10 years.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Grid connection upgrades are a major cost and delay for fast charging sites, especially in urban areas and at rural roadside locations. Battery-buffered chargers that combine charging with storage, peak shaving and backup power are gaining interest in Asia. In Vietnam, where peak tariffs are high and many sites have limited capacity, such designs address both charging and energy cost needs.
6. Other information
