1. Technology overview
CO2 AI is a French climate software company founded as an independent business in 2023 by Charlotte Degot and Florian Jourda, both BCG alumni, after the product was first developed inside Boston Consulting Group. It addresses the fact that Scope 3 can account for up to 90% of a company's emissions, which makes product and supplier data the key to credible decarbonisation.
The platform combines a corporate carbon footprint module for Scopes 1 to 3 with AI emission factor matching, a product carbon footprint (PCF) engine that matches bill of materials data to global emission factor databases for thousands of SKUs in parallel, a Supplier Hub for collecting primary supplier data, marginal abatement cost curves for Scope 3 decarbonisation, and dashboards and reports. Footprints follow PACT, TfS, PEF, ISO 14067, ISO 14044 and the GHG Protocol and can be shared through a free PCF exchange network. Customers include Reckitt, Pernod Ricard, Accor, Sysco and General Mills.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Corporate footprint: Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting with AI emission factor matching.
- Product carbon footprint: BOM-based PCFs for thousands of SKUs in parallel with hotspot analysis.
- Supplier Hub: collects verified primary emissions data from suppliers.
- Scope 3 decarbonisation: marginal abatement cost curves and reduction scenario modelling.
- PCF exchange network: free sharing of footprints with customers and suppliers via API.
- Standards compliance: PACT, TfS, PEF, ISO 14067, ISO 14044 and GHG Protocol, with SOC 2 and ISO 27001 security.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese packaging or chemical supplier to multinational FMCG brands can produce PACT-compliant product footprints and share them through the exchange network. A food or beverage company can footprint its full product range from BOM data. A hotel group can model Scope 3 reduction options across purchased goods.
4. Benefits
The company claims product footprints are calculated about 200 times faster at 90% lower cost than manual LCA work, with Reckitt footprinting around 25,000 products. Supplier primary data replaces generic factors to improve accuracy, and every data point has an audit trail. A free PCF exchange network and accelerator programme let suppliers produce a first PACT-compliant footprint without licence cost.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Global consumer goods, food and chemical brands are moving from spend-based estimates to supplier-specific product footprints exchanged through standards such as PACT. Asian manufacturers supplying these brands, including in Vietnam, are increasingly asked to provide product-level carbon data.
6. Other information
Spun out of Boston Consulting Group and independent since 2023; about 70 staff. Raised around USD 12 million in 2023 led by Unusual Ventures with Partech and BCG. Recognitions: WEF Top 100 Technology Pioneer 2025, WIRED European 100 Hottest Startups 2025, Gartner Hype Cycle for Environmental Sustainability 2025, Verdantix Smart Innovator for PCF and Forrester Notable Vendor.
