1. Technology overview
ThingsBoard began in 2016 as an open-source IoT project by co-founders Andrii Shvaika and Igor Kulikov; ThingsBoard, Inc. was established in 2018 and lists an office in New York. It gives companies a ready platform to connect devices, collect and process telemetry and build monitoring applications instead of developing an IoT backend from scratch.
The platform connects devices directly, through IoT gateways or via LoRaWAN, NB-IoT and other platforms, supporting MQTT, CoAP, HTTP, Modbus, OPC UA, BACnet, OCPP and more. Users model devices and assets as digital twins, process data with rule chains, calculated fields and alarm rules, and build dashboards from more than 600 widgets with white-labelling. It includes OTA updates, multi-tenancy and fine-grained RBAC, and ThingsBoard Edge runs locally during outages. It is offered as a managed cloud or self-hosted, from a single server to clusters above 1 million devices.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Device connectivity: MQTT, CoAP, HTTP, Modbus, OPC UA, BACnet, OCPP, S7, LoRaWAN and Sigfox via direct links, gateways or integrations.
- Digital twin modelling: devices, assets, customers, relations and profiles.
- Rule engine and alarms: rule chains, calculated fields, alarm rules and notifications by email, SMS or Slack.
- Dashboards: more than 600 widgets, a custom widget editor, role-based sharing and white-labelling.
- Device operations: OTA updates, multi-tenancy, RBAC, OAuth 2.0 SSO and two-factor authentication.
- Edge and scale: ThingsBoard Edge for local autonomy and monolith, hybrid or cluster deployments.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese system integrator can build white-label energy monitoring or smart agriculture services for many clients on one multi-tenant deployment. A factory can collect PLC and meter data over Modbus and OPC UA into on-premises dashboards with alarms. An EV charging operator can manage chargers over OCPP alongside site meters.
4. Benefits
Free commercial use for up to 100 devices on one server lowers the cost of pilots, and source code is public on GitHub for review. Self-hosted and air-gapped options let factories and utilities keep data on premises. Broad protocol support means existing PLCs, meters, LoRaWAN sensors and EV chargers can be connected without custom drivers. The company reports more than 5 million devices connected in over 100 countries.
5. Market trends & opportunities
System integrators and telecom operators across Southeast Asia are packaging IoT services for factories, buildings, agriculture and EV charging, and need a platform they can host locally and brand as their own. Data residency expectations and the cost of hyperscaler IoT services push many projects toward self-hosted platforms with edge processing.
6. Other information
Project started in 2016; ThingsBoard, Inc. established in 2018 with an address in New York and a team of about 110 people in 2025. Holds ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certification. Named Top Supplier in Retail 2024 by Reta Awards. Logos on its site include T-Mobile, Bosch, Engie, Intel, Schwarz and Prosegur.
