1. Technology overview
Protix is a Dutch company, based in Den Bosch, that produces insect ingredients from the black soldier fly and describes itself as the world leader in this field, with more than 15 years of pioneering work. It turns food waste and side streams into protein, fat and fertiliser ingredients, reducing the feed industry's reliance on soy, fishmeal and fish oil.
Insect farming and ingredient production run under one roof. The portfolio includes ProteinX insect protein and LipidX insect fat for pet food, aquaculture and livestock feed, PureeX for wet pet food, whole larvae for livestock, Flytilizer and frass for plant care, and eggs for other insect farms. Customers are pet food, salmon and shrimp feed, poultry and pig feed producers, as well as growers and insect breeders.
2. Highlighted features & specifications

- LipidX: insect fat for pet food, aquafeed and livestock diets.
- PureeX: fresh insect-based ingredient for wet pet food.
- Larvae: whole larvae for poultry and other livestock.
- Flytilizer and frass: insect-based fertilisers that feed plants and enrich soil life.

3. Potential application
- Shrimp feed producers in Vietnam adding insect protein and fat to improve growth and immunity.
- Pet food manufacturers launching premium insect-based recipes.
- Food waste processors studying black soldier fly upcycling models for Vietnamese cities.
4. Benefits
- Strong performance: of 91 independently assessed studies, insect nutrition definitively improved fish and shrimp growth in almost 60%.
- Animal health: chitin, proteins and fatty acids support immunity and gut health.
- Low footprint: peer-reviewed LCA by the German Institute of Food Technologies (DIL) confirms low emissions, land and water use.
- Circularity: food waste is upcycled into feed ingredients and fertiliser.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Feed accounts for most emissions in aquaculture, and feed makers face pressure to cut Scope 3 emissions and reliance on fishmeal and soy. Asian markets with advanced food waste systems, such as South Korea, allow food waste to be converted into insect feed, opening a path for regional production.
6. Other information
Headquartered in Den Bosch, the Netherlands (KvK 34354937); founder Kees Aarts. Tyson Foods invested in Protix in 2023 and is a strategic partner. CEO Maiko van der Meer appointed in November 2025.
