1. Technology overview
Green Carbon, Inc. is a Tokyo-based developer of nature-based carbon credits founded in December 2019 and led by CEO Jun Okita. It creates and sells credits from rice paddy methane reduction through alternate wetting and drying (AWD), biochar, mangroves, forest conservation, carbon farming and livestock methane, with projects in Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, India and Australia, and a Vietnamese subsidiary, Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Company Limited.
Its Agreen platform handles the credit journey in one place: a companion app collects farm data such as water and fertiliser use and field photos from farmers, the platform prepares registration and application documents, and a blockchain-based exchange records transactions and retirements to prevent double counting. Through an API link with Regrow's DNDC model, Agreen calculates methane and CO2 emissions for every registered paddy field, and Green Carbon is validating a JAXA ALOS-2 satellite model for paddy water levels. Users include farmers, agribusinesses and corporates generating or buying credits.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Farmer data app: collects water, fertiliser and photo evidence directly from fields and syncs with Agreen.
- Registration workflow: prepares and updates documents for credit registration and applications.
- DNDC emission modelling: API link with Regrow calculates methane and CO2 for all registered paddies.
- Satellite water level model: JAXA ALOS-2 based verification of paddy water levels under demonstration.
- Blockchain credit exchange: records transactions and retirements to prevent tampering and double counting.
- Multi-standard projects: AWD, biochar, mangrove and forest projects under J-Credit, JCM, Verra and Gold Standard.
3. Potential application
A rice cooperative or agribusiness in the Mekong Delta or northern Vietnam can join an AWD project with farm data collected through the Agreen app. A Vietnamese province or company can co-develop a JCM rice or biochar project with Japanese partners. A Japanese or Vietnamese corporate can source traceable paddy methane credits through the platform.
4. Benefits
Farmers and project owners can register, apply for and sell credits through one platform, with documents updated automatically, reducing paperwork. Emission calculation extended to all registered paddy fields via the DNDC model replaces sampling of select fields and automates the path from data collection to issuance. Blockchain records protect against double counting, and projects are registered with more than nine standards including J-Credit, JCM, Verra and Gold Standard.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Rice paddies are a major methane source in Asia, and AWD credits are expanding under Japan's Joint Crediting Mechanism, with Vietnam and the Philippines among partner countries. Vietnam's one million hectare low-emission rice programme in the Mekong Delta increases the need for scalable MRV that can cover many smallholder plots. Japanese buyers also seek nature-based credits for the GX-ETS.
6. Other information
Founded December 2019; HQ at Hanzomon PREX North 9F, Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; capital JPY 50 million. Subsidiary Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Company Limited. Reports about 600,000 t of credits created or planned, more than 10 countries and JPY 2.84 billion in cumulative grants. Holds Japan's first and largest paddy J-Credit certification (about 6,220 t). Selected for JAXA's ALOS-2 commercialisation demonstration.
