1. Technology overview
Trunk Tools was founded in 2021 in New York by CEO Dr. Sarah Buchner, who holds a PhD in construction data and has 20 years of jobsite experience. It tackles the information overload on commercial projects, where superintendents and project engineers lose hours searching thousands of pages of drawings, specifications, RFIs and submittals to answer field questions.
The Cortex platform maps project documents and drawings and lets teams ask questions in natural language, returning answers drawn from drawings, specs, RFIs, schedules and submittals. On top of it, autonomous agents handle entire workflows and link project data to the schedule to flag issues before they cause delays or rework, across tools such as TrunkText, TrunkSubmittal, TrunkRegister, TrunkReview, TrunkRFI, TrunkBid, TrunkBrowse and TrunkChange. Customers are general contractors and specialty builders such as Gilbane, Suffolk and Consigli.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Cortex: Maps drawings, specs, RFIs, schedules and submittals into one searchable project brain.
- Natural language Q&A: Answers field questions with references to the source documents.
- Submittal agents: Support submittal registers and reviews through TrunkSubmittal and TrunkRegister.
- Drawing review: Uses TrunkReview to check drawing revisions and flag inconsistencies.
- Bid and change tools: Supports bidding and change management with TrunkBid and TrunkChange.
- AI enablement: Provides change management and training services for site teams.
3. Potential application
A general contractor on an FDI factory project in Vietnam can let site engineers query English specifications and drawings from a phone. A project management consultant can speed up submittal reviews against specifications. A contractor's estimating team can compare subcontractor bids more consistently.
4. Benefits
Trunk Tools says it is live on 1,000 US projects handling USD 50 billion of construction volume, with custom models trained on more than five years of real jobsite data. Field teams get answers from project documents in seconds instead of searching manually, and agents catch inconsistencies before they turn into rework. Revenue grew fivefold in the six months before its 2025 Series B, and SOC 2 Type II compliance supports enterprise rollouts.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Generative AI is moving from pilots into daily construction workflows, with contractors using agents to search documents, review submittals and level bids. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, large FDI factory and data center projects carry thousands of drawings and specifications in several languages, creating demand for tools that make project information searchable.
6. Other information
