1. Technology overview
JIOS Aerogel is a silica aerogel manufacturer founded in 2013 and headquartered in Singapore, with production in Korea. It was created to make aerogel affordable at scale, since conventional supercritical drying keeps aerogel insulation expensive for mass markets such as electric vehicles and energy storage.
Its patented single-step process forms and dries aerogel in one reaction, producing AeroVa particles that are used as additives in fibre blankets, elastomeric foams and compression pads. Downstream, JIOS designed Thermal Blade, a compressible cell-to-cell thermal runaway barrier for lithium-ion battery packs. Under a Hub and Spoke model introduced in 2025, JIOS makes the aerogel powder in Korea and licenses Thermal Blade production to automotive suppliers near end customers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Single-step aerogel process: forms and dries aerogel in one reaction with low capital needs.
- AeroVa particles: aerogel powder with over 90% porosity and about 30 nm pores.
- Thermal Blade: compressible cell-to-cell thermal runaway barrier for EV and ESS batteries.
- Custom formats: sizes and thicknesses from 2.0 mm to over 5.0 mm, with optional adhesives and liners.
- Licensing model: production systems and processes licensed to established suppliers.
- Patent portfolio: 52 patents across multiple countries with freedom to operate.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese EV and electric motorbike makers can use Thermal Blade between cells in battery packs to meet safety tests. Battery pack assemblers and ESS integrators can license Thermal Blade production locally under the Hub and Spoke model. Insulation manufacturers can add AeroVa particles to blankets and foams for oil and gas or building insulation.
4. Benefits
AeroVa particles offer thermal conductivity as low as 0.021 W/m·K, density of 30-70 kg/m³ and a working range from -200°C to 1,600°C, while being superhydrophobic. The single-step process cuts production time and cost compared with supercritical drying. Thermal Blade comes in thicknesses from 2.0 mm to over 5.0 mm and keeps its performance under pressure up to battery end of life.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Stricter battery safety requirements are making thermal runaway barriers standard in EV and energy storage packs. Automakers are also localising supply chains near assembly plants. Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, is building EV, battery pack and energy storage manufacturing, creating demand for locally produced insulation components.
6. Other information
Founded 2013; headquartered at Science Park, Singapore with a manufacturing plant in Pioneer, Singapore (opened November 2023) and aerogel production in Korea since 2018. Investors include Owens Corning and MegaChem Group. Armacell took full ownership of the AJA aerogel joint venture in 2024. Certified ISO 9001 (TÜV SÜD), ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
