1. Technology overview
Ubie, Inc. was founded in May 2017 in Tokyo by physician Yoshinori Abe and engineer Kota Kubo, and has offices in Japan and the US. It applies medical AI to hospital operations and clinical work so that doctors, nurses and clerical staff can focus on care.
For hospitals it offers three services. Ubie Generative AI supports 100+ use cases across professions, such as real-time consultation records, chart summaries, discharge summaries, referral letters and clinical research tasks, and runs inside the hospital network with EMR integration. Ubie DPC Supporter suggests optimal DPC codes at discharge to recover lost revenue. Ubie AI Medical Questionnaire generates tailored intake questions on smartphones and converts answers into medical language.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- AI medical questionnaire: generates patient-specific intake questions and outputs answers in clinical language.
- Real-time consultation records: drafts notes during outpatient visits and informed-consent discussions.
- Document generation: chart summaries, discharge summaries, referral letters and safety reports.
- DPC coding support: proposes optimal diagnosis procedure combination codes before billing is finalised.
- Multi-profession use: tools for pharmacists, therapists, dietitians, clerks and medical records staff.
- EMR integration: connects to the hospital EMR and runs within the hospital network.
3. Potential application
Private hospitals in Vietnam could use AI questionnaires on patients' phones to collect history before outpatient visits and shorten waiting time. Hospital finance teams could study AI coding checks to reduce under-billing as payment models evolve. University hospitals could apply generative AI to discharge summaries and clinical research paperwork.
4. Benefits
Kyushu Cancer Center cut first-visit chart entry by 10 minutes and meeting minutes work by 70%. Ryukyu University Hospital made clinical research work 2.33 times more efficient and cut initial admission records from two hours to five minutes. Kyushu University Hospital expects more than JPY 65 million a year in revenue improvement from DPC Supporter. Complies with Japan's medical information security guidelines and can run fully inside the hospital network.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Hospitals in Japan and across Asia face staff shortages and pressure on margins, and generative AI is moving from pilots to hospital-wide use for documentation and coding. Vietnam's shift to diagnosis-related payment models and electronic medical records creates similar needs for AI intake, documentation and coding optimisation in hospitals.
6. Other information
Founded in May 2017; headquartered in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, with offices in Japan and the US; 240 employees and JPY 10.98 billion raised in total. Used by 160+ acute care hospitals including 20+ university hospitals; Ubie Medical Navi installed at 1,800 medical institutions. Won the MHLW Minister's Award at the Japan Startup Awards 2026.
