1. Technology overview
PV Doctor is a Singapore-based spin-off of the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) at the National University of Singapore, launched in April 2025 to commercialise about 15 years of SERIS research on PV system performance. It helps owners of rooftop, commercial and utility-scale solar find and recover hidden energy losses, with a focus on tropical climates where degradation is faster than financial models assume.
The Smart O&M service connects directly to existing inverter portals, so onboarding needs no extra hardware. It combines inverter data with satellite imagery, weather station data and irradiation data to calculate performance ratios, benchmark each system against peers and regional standards, detect faults and recommend fixes. The Smart Generation Replicator reconstructs unconstrained generation at 5-minute resolution to separate curtailment, shutdown and grid losses from real faults. PV Doctor also offers preventive O&M, investigations, repowering and audits, and serves systems in 24 countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Zero-hardware onboarding: data is pulled directly from existing inverter portals.
- Performance assessment: combines satellite, weather station and irradiation data to compute performance ratio.
- Peer benchmarking: compares each system with similar systems and regional standards.
- Smart Generation Replicator: rebuilds unconstrained output at 5-minute resolution to isolate curtailment and grid losses.
- Climate-specific insights: degradation and PID risk analysis across 11 climate zones.
- Field services: preventive O&M, rectification, repowering and independent audits.
3. Potential application
Factories with self-consumption rooftop solar under zero-export rules in Vietnam could quantify curtailment and real faults separately. Rooftop solar investors managing hundreds of small systems could monitor the whole portfolio through existing inverter portals without new hardware. Banks financing solar could use independent performance audits during due diligence.
4. Benefits
Owners can start monitoring without buying site hardware, because data is taken from the inverter portal they already use. Peer benchmarking and automated analytics expose recoverable losses; one case study showed a 3.4% year-on-year gain. Separating curtailment, shutdown and grid losses avoids misreading external constraints as degradation or faults. The company reports that its AI work cuts false alarm investigation time by up to 90%.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Research co-presented by PV Doctor and SERIS in 2025 found that tropical PV systems degrade at 1.2 to 1.4% per year, 30 to 40% faster than typically modelled. Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, has a large and growing base of rooftop and C&I solar, often with curtailment or zero-export limits, which raises demand for analytics that separate real faults from grid constraints.
6. Other information
PV Doctor Pte. Ltd. is based at 18 Cross Street, Singapore, and was launched on 2 April 2025 as a spin-off of SERIS at NUS. Co-founders are Dr Andre Nobre (Managing Director) and Dr Thomas Reindl. It passed 1 GWp under management in November 2025 and 2 GWp across more than 2,000 systems in May 2026. Vietnam is among its 24 listed operating countries.
