1. Technology overview
Swobbee GmbH is a climate technology company founded in Berlin, Germany, in 2020, with operations in Berlin and New York. It addresses the fire risk, warehouse space and van trips caused by charging light electric vehicle batteries in homes and depots, by moving charging into monitored swapping stations.
The modular Swobbee Station holds 10 to 30 batteries in single or four-battery compartments, can be configured for different battery formats from e-scooters to cargo bikes, opens via app or RFID card and has built-in smoke detection. Every station reports to a cloud platform where operators see the state of charge, state of health and temperature of each battery, receive utilisation reports and use a digital twin of every battery. Customers include delivery riders on a public subscription in New York, delivery and sharing fleets with their own stations, and drone and robotics operators.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Modular station: holds 10 to 30 batteries in single or four-battery compartments.
- Multi-format compartments: configurable for batteries from e-scooters to cargo bikes.
- App and RFID access: compartments open with the Swobbee app or an RFID card.
- Built-in fire protection: smoke detector and early flagging of suspicious batteries.
- Operator dashboard: live state of charge, state of health and temperature for each battery.
- Reports and digital twin: utilisation reports and remote maintenance for every station.
3. Potential application
Food and parcel delivery operators in Vietnamese cities can place stations at rider hubs to remove battery charging from homes and boarding houses. Bike and scooter sharing operators can swap batteries on site instead of collecting them. Drone inspection and warehouse robot operators can shorten downtime between missions.
4. Benefits
Fleet teams swap batteries on site instead of driving them to a warehouse, and do not need to rent charging space in the city. Batteries charge inside monitored stations with smoke detection, reducing fire risk. One station can take different battery formats, so mixed fleets avoid separate infrastructure, and controlled charging extends battery life. Most fleets rent a station for a monthly fee plus a small per-swap fee and keep ownership of their batteries.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Cities are tightening rules on charging lithium batteries indoors after e-bike fires, and delivery platforms are electrifying rider fleets. Light electric vehicles dominate urban delivery in Southeast Asia, so shared, monitored swapping stations for e-bikes, cargo bikes and delivery robots are a growing need.
6. Other information
Swobbee GmbH, Johann-Hittorf-Strasse 8, 12489 Berlin, Germany; CEO Thomas Duscha. First stations were installed in Germany, and the company now runs 16 public stations in New York City and Jersey City with Taiwanese manufacturer SINBON as a partner. Co-funded by EIT InnoEnergy.
