1. Technology overview
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. developed the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: (MPP), a portable, swappable lithium-ion battery designed to free electric vehicles and equipment from charging time and limited range. The same pack powers Honda e: business motorcycles, the EM1 e: and CUV e: scooters and the Honda Power Pod e: portable power supply, and Honda supplies it to construction equipment makers and agricultural robot OEMs.
Each pack has a battery management unit with multiple ICs that controls input and output, records failures, charging frequency and component data, and transmits them during recharging, with thermal management and vibration-resistant design for long life. Honda and its partners run a battery sharing service in which subscribers find a battery exchange station in an app, tap a smart card, return a depleted pack and take a charged one. The service operates in Japan through Gachaco, in India through Honda Power Pack Energy India, and in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam through local Honda subsidiaries.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Swappable standard pack: portable lithium-ion battery shared across vehicles and equipment.
- Intelligent management unit: multiple ICs control output and record failures and usage data.
- Thermal and shock design: limits temperature rise and resists vibration for long service life.
- Battery sharing stations: app search, smart card tap and swap of depleted for charged packs.
- Multi-use products: powers e: business bikes, EM1 e:, CUV e: and the Power Pod e: supply.
- OEM supply: packs supplied to construction equipment and agricultural robot manufacturers.
3. Potential application
Delivery, postal and courier businesses in Vietnam can run Honda electric business motorcycles on the battery sharing network. Construction equipment and agricultural machinery makers can integrate the standard pack instead of designing their own batteries. Event, retail and field service companies can use Power Pod e: units with shared packs for portable power.
4. Benefits
Riders and fleets swap a depleted pack for a charged one at city exchange stations instead of waiting for a recharge, removing range anxiety. One standard battery works across motorcycles, portable power and equipment, so businesses can share packs between uses. The intelligent management unit logs usage and faults, supporting safety and service, and the design limits temperature rise and battery deterioration.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Motorcycle-heavy Asian markets are moving to electric two-wheelers, and standardised swappable batteries shared across brands and uses are gaining support from manufacturers and energy companies. Honda now runs battery sharing in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, India and Japan, aligning with Vietnam's push to cut emissions from urban motorbikes.
6. Other information
Honda Power Pack Energy India was established in November 2021 for battery sharing in Bengaluru. Gachaco was set up in April 2022 by Honda, ENEOS, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. Thai Honda started battery sharing in May 2024, PT Astra Honda Motor in March 2025 and Honda Vietnam in June 2026.
