1. Technology overview
Yindii was founded in 2020 in Bangkok by Louis-Alban Batard-Dupre and Mahima Rajangam Natarajan after seeing how much food was wasted while volunteering at a food bank. Operated by Watawaste Pte. Ltd., it helps bakeries, cafes, restaurants, grocers, supermarkets and hotels recover revenue from food that remains unsold at the end of the day, and now operates in Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea.
Merchants list surplus as discounted Surprise Bags in the app, set the daily quantity or switch it to zero when there is no surplus, and customers pay in-app and pick up in store, with delivery in some markets. A merchant dashboard tracks orders and earnings, payouts are made by bank transfer, and Yindii charges a success fee per sale. Partners include Grand Hyatt, Sofitel, citySuper and Tous Les Jours.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Surprise Bags: merchants sell end-of-day surplus as discounted mystery bags.
- Daily quantity control: set the number of bags or zero on days without surplus.
- Merchant dashboard: tracks orders, pickups and earnings per outlet.
- In-app payment and payouts: customers pay in the app and stores receive bank transfers.
- Pickup and delivery: mainly in-store collection, with delivery in some markets.
- Multi-market network: active in Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea.
3. Potential application
- Bakery and coffee chains in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City selling unsold pastries at closing time.

- Supermarkets offering near-date fresh items to price-conscious shoppers through an app channel.
4. Benefits
- Recovered revenue: stores on Yindii have recovered over 5.5 million USD from food already produced.
- New customers: listing surplus exposes outlets to more than 490,000 registered users.
- Low effort: an end-of-day routine with adjustable bag quantities and no upfront fee.
- Sustainability reporting: over 1.2 million meals rescued and about 3,100 tonnes of CO2 offset across the platform.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Hotels, bakery chains and supermarkets in Asia face rising pressure to cut food waste while protecting margins, and surplus-food marketplaces have grown quickly in Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok. Consumers' interest in discounted near-date food and corporate ESG targets make such channels attractive for F&B operators in Vietnam's large cities as well.
