1. Technology overview
Vivacity Labs, trading as VivaCity, was formed on 21 December 2015 by three friends who met building a solar car at Cambridge, and started in London. It helps cities overcome transport challenges by replacing manual traffic counts and loop detectors with AI sensors that measure every road user.
VivaCity sensors use computer vision at the edge to classify and count vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians and to capture speeds, turning movements, traffic flow and near-miss incidents, sending only anonymous data to the cloud. Three solutions sit on top: Smart Traffic Monitoring for transport planning, Smart Road Safety for near-miss analysis toward Vision Zero, and Smart Signal Control, which uses the live data to optimise existing traffic signals for congestion and sustainable modes. Customers are national and local transport authorities in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and North America.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- AI sensors: Classify and count vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians with edge computer vision.
- Movement data: Capture speeds, turning movements and traffic flow at junctions and links.
- Near-miss detection: Record conflicts between road users to support Vision Zero programmes.
- Smart Signal Control: Optimise existing signal timings in real time using live multimodal data.
- Privacy by design: Send anonymous data rather than video to the cloud.
- Data dashboard: Give planners secure access to historic and live transport data.
3. Potential application
A city transport department can count motorbikes, cars and pedestrians at key junctions to plan signal timing and bus priority. Road safety programmes can map near-miss hotspots near schools. New urban areas and industrial parks can measure traffic before and after infrastructure changes.
4. Benefits
Authorities get continuous multimodal counts, speeds and turning data instead of occasional manual surveys. Near-miss detection lets road safety teams act before collisions happen. Smart Signal Control improves the performance of existing traffic control systems without replacing them, reducing congestion and supporting bus, cycling and walking priorities.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Transport authorities are moving to continuous, data-driven traffic management and AI-assisted signal control to cut congestion and road deaths. Vietnam's major cities began AI-based signal adjustment and camera networks in 2025, creating demand for accurate multimodal data in mixed traffic.
6. Other information
Formed on 21 December 2015 and started in London. Raised a seed round led by Tracsis in 2017, a round led by Downing in 2019 and a 5 million GBP Series A in 2021, and won the Queen's Enterprise Award for Innovation. Customers include the UK Department for Transport, Transport for London, Transport for Greater Manchester, City of Melbourne and Wellington City Council. Marked its tenth anniversary in December 2025.
