1. Technology overview
Banyan Nation is a Hyderabad-based, vertically integrated plastics recycling company, incubated at Columbia Business School and registered in India in 2013. It turns post-consumer polyolefin packaging into human-contact-safe recycled resins so that FMCG brands can move to circular packaging while integrating the informal waste sector.
Its proprietary data intelligence platform maps, trains and connects thousands of informal collectors and aggregators, with a trading module for buying standard bales. In the plant, a hot wash process removes over 98% of surface contaminants, colour-mixing algorithms keep batches consistent and a deodoriser removes volatile organic compounds. A traceability engine generates QR codes that link packaging back to collectors. The company also sells EPR plastic credits and offers recyclability assessments to brands.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Data intelligence platform: maps and integrates informal collectors and aggregators across hundreds of cities.
- Trading module: direct purchase of standard bales of post-consumer and post-industrial plastic.
- Hot wash technology: removes over 98% of labels, adhesives, inks and product residues.
- Colour and odour control: colour-mixing algorithms and a deodoriser for consistent resin.
- QR traceability engine: links each resin batch and package back to its collection source.
- EPR and advisory services: EPR plastic credits, recyclability assessment and packaging advisory.
3. Potential application
FMCG companies in Vietnam can evaluate traceable recycled HDPE and PP for detergent and personal care bottles. Vietnamese recyclers can partner on hot-wash and deodorisation know-how to upgrade resin quality. EPR organisations can adapt the collector-mapping model to formalise scrap dealers.
4. Benefits
Brands get recycled PE and PP resins with consistent colour, odour and technical performance for bottles in home, personal and fabric care. Every batch comes with full material traceability and EPR documentation aligned with CPCB guidelines. QR codes on packaging can show consumers where the plastic was collected. The company reports more than 3 billion bottles on shelves made with its recycled plastics.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Recycled-content targets and EPR rules in India and Southeast Asia are pushing FMCG brands to use post-consumer resin in rigid packaging. Vietnam's EPR regime and its large informal scrap collection network face similar issues of traceability and quality, making integrated collection data and high-grade recycled polyolefins relevant.
6. Other information
Incubated at Columbia Business School and registered in India in 2013; headquartered in Hyderabad, led by co-founders Mani Vajipeyajula and Rajkiran Madangopal. It won a Circulars Award at the World Economic Forum in 2018, raised Series A in 2019 and Series B in 2023, and supplies recycled resin to Unilever and Reckitt. In 2025 it obtained a foreign currency loan from the US DFC.
