1. Technology overview
Equiwatt Limited is headquartered in England and was founded by CEO Johnson Fernandes. It builds demand flexibility technology that rewards households for cutting electricity use during peak demand, and sells this technology to energy suppliers, network operators and other businesses that need to engage customers in flexibility.
The powerResponse SaaS platform integrates into business systems, and a white-label version lets suppliers launch their own branded flexibility app, as ScottishPower did with its PowerSaver app. The platform runs grid events, schedules smart devices to tariffs, tracks energy and carbon savings and manages rewards and leaderboards, and has been used for the UK Demand Flexibility Service. Partners include ScottishPower, NESO, Northern Powergrid, SP Energy Networks, UK Power Networks, Schneider Electric and Nanyang Technological University.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Grid event management: runs switch-off events that reward households for reducing peak use.
- Automated device scheduling: syncs smart devices such as plugs and heating to tariffs.
- White-label app: branded flexibility app for suppliers and network operators.
- powerResponse API: SaaS integration into suppliers' business systems.
- Energy and carbon tracking: usage insights and carbon reduction reporting.
- Rewards and engagement: points store, community and company leaderboards.
3. Potential application
Power corporations in Vietnam could run reward-based peak reduction campaigns for households in hot months. Smart home and air-conditioner brands could add demand response features to their apps through a white-label platform. Large employers could run workplace energy-saving leagues as part of ESG programmes.
4. Benefits
Suppliers and network operators can earn revenue from flexibility markets while engaging residential customers with rewards. A white-label option lets a supplier launch a branded flexibility programme quickly instead of building an app. Equiwatt reports more than 250,000 kWh of peak energy shifted, over 90,000 kg of CO2 saved and more than 200,000 GBP awarded to households.
5. Market trends & opportunities
System operators increasingly pay households to shift demand at peak times, and suppliers need engaging tools to recruit customers. Singapore is piloting virtual power plants under an EMA regulatory sandbox, and Vietnam's dry-season peak shortages and rising air-conditioning load make residential demand response an emerging need in the region.
