1. Technology overview
Quuppa was established in 2012 in Espoo, Finland by the Nokia Research Centre team that invented High Accuracy Indoor Positioning, and has offices in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Sydney and Washington DC. It provides a Bluetooth-based real-time locating system for tracking assets, people and workflows indoors and outdoors, sold mainly through solution, tag and technology partners.
The Quuppa Intelligent Locating System uses Angle-of-Arrival direction finding: Quuppa locators measure the direction of signals from Bluetooth tags, and the Positioning Engine computes locations. The software suite includes Site Planner, Site Manager and a Rules Engine, and the engine API has evolved toward event-driven data integration. It can locate approved tags, tested devices, smartphones, scanners and sensors. Customers include PostNord, Kloeckner Metals and EJOT.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Bluetooth AoA positioning: locators measure signal direction for high-accuracy tracking.
- Positioning Engine: computes locations and exposes an event-driven API for integration.
- Site Planner and Site Manager: tools to design, deploy and operate installations.
- Rules Engine: triggers actions based on location events.
- Open device ecosystem: approved tags, tested devices, verified sensors and smartphones.
- Low-cost tags: compatibility with InPlay IN100 NanoBeacon designs targeting about 1-2 EUR per tag.
3. Potential application
A parcel sorting hub in Ho Chi Minh City can track roll cages and sorting zones to raise throughput. A metal processing plant can locate coils and loads to shorten truck loading. A fastener or component maker can follow production orders across work centers.
4. Benefits
Published case studies show measurable gains: PostNord raised sorting efficiency by 25% and parcels handled per hour by 32% with ROI in under four months, and Kloeckner Metals cut load time from 45 to 7 minutes. EJOT tracks 8,000 orders simultaneously and reduced search time by 75%. The open tag ecosystem lets buyers choose devices from many vendors.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Bluetooth direction finding has become a standard feature, and cheaper tags are enabling disposable labels for parcels and pallets. Logistics and manufacturing buyers want location data that flows as events into WMS and MES. Parcel hubs and e-commerce warehouses in Vietnam and Southeast Asia are expanding fast and looking for automation that does not require major rebuilds.
6. Other information
Quuppa was founded in September 2012 in Espoo, Finland by the Nokia Research Centre team behind High Accuracy Indoor Positioning. It has offices in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Sydney and Washington DC, and appointed Fabio Belloni as CEO in January 2025.
