1. Technology overview
Formlabs was founded in 2011 by three MIT graduate students who built an affordable 3D printer with industrial part quality, launched through Kickstarter with the Form 1. Headquartered in Boston, it has locations in Ohio, Wisconsin, Berlin, Budapest, Shenzhen and Tokyo, more than 750 employees and over 130,000 printers sold, and describes itself as the largest supplier of professional SLA and SLS printers.
The SLA range includes Form 4 and the large-format Form 4L, biocompatible Form 4B and 4BL for medical and dental use, Form Auto automation and the entry-level Form Studio 1. The SLS range includes Fuse 1+ and the industrial Fuse X1 with a 330 x 330 x 565 mm build volume and AI-powered print failure prevention. Wash, cure, sift and blast units handle post-processing, and PreForm, Dashboard and the Developer Platform manage print preparation and fleets, with more than 45 proprietary materials. Customers span engineering, manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, dental, medical, education and jewellery.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Form 4 family: fast SLA printers, including large-format Form 4L and biocompatible Form 4B and 4BL.
- Fuse X1: industrial SLS with a 61.5 L build volume and 30%+ packing density for production runs.
- Print Intelligence: AI-powered monitoring helps prevent print failures.
- Post-processing: Form Wash, Form Cure, Fuse Sift and Fuse Blast automate cleaning and finishing.
- Software: PreForm, Dashboard and the Developer Platform manage preparation, fleets and integrations.
- Materials: more than 45 proprietary resins and powders plus an open material mode.
3. Potential application
Electronics and automotive suppliers in Vietnam can print nylon jigs, fixtures and end-use parts in small series on Fuse X1. Dental labs and clinics can produce models, surgical guides and aligner moulds with biocompatible Form 4B resins. Product design studios and universities can prototype housings and test injection mould inserts in-house.
4. Benefits
Formlabs states that Fuse X1 produces production-quality SLS parts for 50% less, with 3 times the throughput of competitors in less than half the floor space. Radio Flyer reports cutting prototyping timelines by 90% with 9 times less labour using Fuse X1. Easy installation, an ecosystem of materials and post-processing, and authorised resellers with showrooms in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang lower the barrier for Vietnamese companies.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Professional SLA and SLS printers are moving from prototyping into tooling, manufacturing aids and end-use parts, while lower-cost industrial SLS opens powder-bed production to mid-sized manufacturers and service bureaus. Vietnam's growing electronics, automotive, dental and medical sectors are adopting in-house 3D printing to shorten product development and reduce outsourcing.
6. Other information
Founded in 2011 by MIT graduate students including CEO Max Lobovsky; headquartered in Boston with offices in North America, Europe and Asia. More than 130,000 printers sold and over 500 million parts printed. Acquired Micronics in 2024 to advance accessible SLS. Former Apple hardware chief Dan Riccio joined as strategic advisor in August 2026. Authorised reseller in Vietnam: Thinksmart Inc., with showrooms in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang.
