1. Technology overview
AtmosZero is a US company based in Loveland, Colorado, that builds electrified steam boilers for industry and campuses. It targets the fuel-fired boilers that supply process heat, which the company notes accounts for about half of industrial energy use, and offers a modular heat pump that produces steam without on-site combustion.
Boiler 2.0 is a packaged air-source or liquid-source heat pump that draws ambient heat and upgrades it to saturated steam with high-efficiency centrifugal compressors and an ultra-low GWP refrigerant. One unit delivers up to about 1 MW thermal and up to 1,531 kg/h of steam at 121 to 153 C, with an optional mechanical vapour compressor raising steam to 165 C. It needs only outside air, feedwater and power, installs as a drop-in boiler replacement and can also supply chilled water. Target users are breweries, food processors, pharmaceutical and chemical plants, hospitals and district steam networks.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Air or liquid source: draws heat from ambient air between -20 and 40 C or from a liquid loop.
- Saturated steam output: delivers up to 1,531 kg/h of steam at 121 to 153 C per unit.
- MVR booster: an optional mechanical vapour compressor lifts steam to 165 C, with 200 C on the roadmap.
- Simultaneous chilling: optional chilled water output above 350 kW thermal.
- Low GWP refrigerant: ultra-low GWP options with low flammability and low toxicity.
- Flexible layout: self-contained package or split installation with remote air coils.
3. Potential application
Breweries and beverage plants in Vietnam could replace small oil or gas boilers for pasteurisation and CIP steam. Pharmaceutical factories could use units that supply both steam and chilled water. Hospitals and university campuses could electrify central sterilisation and heating steam.
4. Benefits
Plants can replace a gas boiler with a self-contained electric unit that the company says installs in days and needs no waste heat integration. Each unit produces zero on-site carbon, NOx, SOx and particulate emissions. Optional chilling capacity of more than 350 kW thermal lets one machine cover both steam and cooling loads, and modular units can be added as demand grows.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Process steam is one of the largest sources of industrial emissions, and electrifying it with heat pumps is gaining policy support and buyer interest. In Vietnam, food, beverage and pharmaceutical exporters face carbon disclosure demands from global buyers and rising costs for imported fuels, which favours electric steam paired with rooftop solar.
