1. Technology overview
volytica diagnostics is a Dresden-based battery analytics company spun out of Fraunhofer IVI in 2019, building on a research group that monitored some of Europe's first electric buses from 2012. It provides manufacturer-independent diagnostics so fleet operators, buyers, insurers and storage owners can judge battery safety, health and residual value.
Its cloud-based vdx engine analyses field data sent by battery systems to estimate degradation, state of health, anomalies and safety risks. The vdx sentry feature acts as a virtual battery expert with automated monitoring, smart alerts and recommendations, and data can be pulled into other systems via API. Services include independent appraisals for in-factory, pre-delivery, end-of-warranty and resale checks of e-buses, trucks and other EVs, as well as BESS monitoring.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- vdx engine: cloud analytics on field data for degradation, state of health and anomalies.
- vdx sentry: automated monitoring, smart alerts and expert recommendations.
- Independent EV battery appraisal: checks at factory, delivery, end of warranty and resale.
- Fleet operations tools: quick decisions on safety, downtime and predictive maintenance.
- Value retention tracking: long-term performance data to extend lifetime and asset value.
- API data integration: insights feed into existing fleet and trading systems.
3. Potential application
Electric bus operators in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can monitor packs for safety and warranty evidence. Leasing firms and banks financing EV fleets can use appraisals to set residual values. Battery second-life integrators can screen retired bus packs before building storage systems.
4. Benefits
Operators can cut total operating costs of electric fleets by up to 30 percent, according to the company, through predictive maintenance and early fault detection. Independent appraisals give buyers and sellers a fair basis for pricing used electric vehicles, where the battery can be over 40 percent of transaction value. Early warnings have identified severe cell defects two weeks before they escalated in an e-bus fleet case.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Electric bus and truck fleets are reaching resale and end-of-warranty points, and battery passports will require health data. Vietnam's cities are electrifying bus fleets and ride-hailing operators run large electric fleets, so independent health monitoring helps manage safety, warranty claims and the decision between reuse and recycling.
6. Other information
Spun out of Fraunhofer IVI in 2019; headquartered at Theresienstrasse 18, Dresden, Germany. Achieved ISO 27001 certification in 2023. With TUV Nord it assessed 259 used BYD e-buses sold by Keolis in the Netherlands in 2022, and it has worked with Mahle and e-truck maker FRAMO. Finalist for The smarter E AWARD 2026.
