1. Technology overview

Carbonfact is a Paris-based environmental data platform built specifically for apparel and footwear brands and their suppliers; its legal entity is Kanso, Inc. and it is backed by Y Combinator and Alven, having raised 17 million US dollars. Its mission is to decarbonise fashion by giving brands and suppliers the data they need to measure, understand and reduce emissions, most of which sit in Scope 3 at material and manufacturing tiers.

The platform ingests product, bill-of-materials and supplier data from PLM, ERP, traceability systems, data warehouses or Excel files, fills data gaps automatically and calculates corporate Scope 1 to 3 emissions under the GHG Protocol and SKU-level product LCAs with all 16 EU PEF indicators. Modules cover reporting for more than 20 frameworks such as CSRD, CDP and the French Eco-Score, SBTi target setting, decarbonisation scenario modelling, digital product passports and a free supplier data exchange that links over 7,000 factories. Customers include On, GANNI, Carhartt, Victoria's Secret and VF Corporation.

2. Highlighted features & specifications

  • Carbon accounting: corporate Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory under the GHG Protocol.
  • Product LCA: SKU-level footprints with all 16 EU PEF indicators and the final apparel and footwear PEFCR.
  • Data management: automated ingestion from PLM, ERP and traceability tools with gap-filling.
  • Reporting: outputs for more than 20 frameworks including CSRD, CDP, French Eco-Score and digital product passports.
  • Decarbonisation and SBTi: scenario modelling, waterfall charts and SBTi target submission support.
  • Carbonfact for Suppliers: free data exchange network for factories and material makers.

3. Potential application

A Vietnamese garment or footwear factory supplying European brands can join the supplier network to share product footprints with its buyers. A local fashion brand exporting to the EU can calculate PEF scores and prepare digital product passports. A fabric mill can show buyers the lower footprint of its recycled or low-impact materials.

4. Benefits

Brands get SKU-level footprints instead of spend-based averages, so supplier and material choices show up in their Scope 3 numbers. The Product Impact Simulator lets teams test materials and sourcing before production; Adore Me used it when moving part of its manufacturing from China to Vietnam and cut the footprint of its January 2024 collection by 12%. Methodology is peer-reviewed annually by PwC, and suppliers can share data on the platform for free.

6. Other information
