1. Technology overview
CarbonCloud is a Gothenburg-based Swedish climate intelligence company founded by scientists and led by CEO David Bryngelsson, focused on the food and beverage industry. It helps food brands, retailers, wholesalers, ingredient suppliers and packaging converters measure and cut supply chain emissions, which make up most of a food company's footprint, and it runs ClimateHub, a free database of more than 50,000 product and ingredient footprints.
The platform models product carbon footprints from basic recipe and ingredient data using AI and a secondary-data library, then refines them with primary data. Modules cover Scope 3 Category 1 calculations from purchase data, corporate Scope 1 to 3 footprints with FLAG splits, SBTi FLAG target inventories, packaging and PPWR reporting, supplier engagement, climate risk and wider impacts such as land and water use. Results follow ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol and are shared through APIs to ERP, PLM and BI systems. Users include Oatly, Unilever, Dole, Bidfood and Menigo.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Product carbon footprints: per-product footprints with FLAG and per-gas breakdowns under ISO 14067.
- Scope 3 calculations: Category 1 emissions built from purchase data.
- Corporate footprint: Scope 1 to 3 inventory with FLAG split from the product model.
- Supplier engagement: invite suppliers at all tiers to share primary data and footprints.
- SBTi FLAG and packaging: target-setting inventories, base-year restatement and PPWR packaging reporting.
- Data and API: ClimateHub database and API links to ERP, PLM and BI systems.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese coffee, cashew or seafood exporter can calculate product footprints requested by European buyers. A food and beverage group can build a Scope 3 inventory for SBTi FLAG targets and invite its farm and ingredient suppliers to share data. A packaging converter can report packaging data needed by EU customers under PPWR.
4. Benefits
Food companies get an initial Scope 3 estimate quickly from secondary data and then improve it as suppliers add primary data. Suppliers use the platform at no cost and only calculated footprints are shared, which keeps their activity data private. Bidfood, whose Scope 3 is about 97% of its footprint, saw more than half of its first invited suppliers connect within two weeks.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Food companies face SBTi FLAG targets, the GHG Protocol land sector rules, CSRD and the EU packaging and deforestation regulations, all of which need ingredient-level supply chain data. Exporters of coffee, seafood, rice, cashew and fruit in Vietnam and Southeast Asia are increasingly asked by global buyers to supply product carbon footprints.
6. Other information
Headquartered at Aschebergsgatan 44, Gothenburg, Sweden, and founded by scientists. Raised a 7.5 million euro Series A; chairman Olaf Schmitz is a former head of business development at Amazon Europe. Partners and customers include Bidfood, Menigo (a Sysco subsidiary), Dole Sunshine Company and Triumf Glass.
