1. Technology overview
CARTO was founded in 2012 in Madrid by Javier de la Torre and Sergio Álvarez and is now headquartered in New York, with offices in Madrid and Seville and more than 160 staff. It addresses the silos, ETL work and specialist bottlenecks of traditional desktop GIS by running spatial analysis directly inside cloud data warehouses.
The cloud-native platform connects to Google BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, AWS, Azure and Oracle so data never leaves the customer's warehouse. Builder visualises billions of points with deck.gl and GPU rendering, Workflows offers more than 100 low-code analysis components with ML and AI, the Analytics Toolbox adds spatial SQL functions, and Data Observatory supplies third-party datasets. AI Agents and an MCP server let users build maps and apps in natural language. Customers include cities and governments, insurers, telecoms, retailers, real estate and logistics firms.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Cloud-native GIS: Runs natively on BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, AWS, Azure and Oracle.
- Builder: Visualises billions of points and builds maps through natural language.
- Workflows: Provides 100+ drag-and-drop spatial analysis components with ML and AI.
- AI Agents and MCP Server: Bring geospatial analysis into ChatGPT and other AI platforms.
- Data Observatory: Enriches analysis with demographic, mobility and POI datasets.
- App development: Builds scalable map apps on deck.gl without back-end ETL.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese retail chain can score new store locations using footfall and demographic data in BigQuery. A telecom operator can plan 5G network rollout from coverage and demand maps. A city agency can analyse traffic, flood and population layers to prioritise infrastructure investment.
4. Benefits
Analysis runs where the data already lives, removing ETL pipelines and keeping governance and security in the customer's cloud. Low-code Workflows and AI Agents let analysts and business users answer location questions without GIS specialists. Customers such as JLL, EQT, Mercado Libre and Renault Group describe replacing static reports and disparate tools with one platform.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Enterprises are consolidating data in cloud warehouses and adding generative AI, which pushes GIS toward cloud-native and agent-based tools. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, banks, retailers, telecoms and city agencies moving data to Google Cloud, AWS and Azure need spatial analysis that works inside those environments.
6. Other information
Founded in 2012 in Madrid; HQ in New York with offices in Madrid and Seville and over 160 employees. Acquired Geographica in 2019; Data Observatory received EU Horizon 2020 funding in 2020. Founder Javier de la Torre becomes CEO on 1 November 2026, with Luis Sanz remaining on the board.
