1. Technology overview
Space BD is a Tokyo space business company founded in 2017 that aims to make space an established industry. It removes the complexity of getting small satellites and experiments into orbit by acting as a one-stop hub between satellite owners and launch providers, and it also offers microgravity utilisation and space talent training.
Its launch service is independent of any rocket: it selects Japanese or international rideshares or dedicated flights to suit each satellite, and handles ground transport, delivery to the launch site, insurance and regulatory procedures. In 2018 it was selected by JAXA for commercial satellite deployment from the ISS Kibo module, and in 2019 as the only private provider of rideshare slots on Japan's H-IIA and H3 rockets. It also partners with SpaceX rideshare, Gilmour Space and INNOSPACE, and had supported more than 100 satellite missions by January 2026.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Launch services: rideshare and dedicated launches on Japanese and international rockets.
- ISS Kibo deployment: CubeSat release from the Japanese module under a JAXA service contract extended to 2030.
- H3 rideshare: commercial rideshare on Japan's flagship rocket, first completed in June 2026.
- One-stop satellite transport: ground transport, launch site delivery and insurance.
- In-orbit demonstration: opportunities to test hardware and components in space.
- Space talent development: practical satellite development training for students and companies.
3. Potential application
- Vietnamese universities arranging ISS Kibo deployment of an educational CubeSat with full launch logistics.
- Domestic satellite companies booking H3 or Falcon 9 rideshare slots for their first micro-satellite.
- Component makers using in-orbit demonstration to qualify new space hardware.
4. Benefits
- Access to many launch options, from ISS deployment to H3 and Falcon 9 rideshares, through one contract.
- Handling of logistics, insurance and regulatory filings that new satellite teams often lack experience with.
- Fast schedules: the CoRAL satellite with Sapienza University launched 1.1 years after contract signing.
- ISO 9001 certified quality management.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Rideshare demand is rising while launch capacity remains tight, so satellite owners value brokers who can secure slots across several rockets. Universities and agencies in Southeast Asia have used Japan's Kibo module for first CubeSats, and Japan is promoting space cooperation with Asian partners.
6. Other information
Founded on 1 September 2017; headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo. Closed a Series C of over JPY 3.5 billion in 2026 and formed a capital alliance with Mitsubishi HC Capital. Signed a launch service contract with Japan's Ministry of Defense (2025) and an MoU with Australia's Inovor Technologies (2025). ISO 9001 certified in 2025.
