1. Technology overview
HISAKA WORKS is a Japanese industrial machinery maker established in May 1942 and headquartered in Osaka, with about 1,063 consolidated employees. Its businesses cover plate heat exchangers, valves and process engineering for food, pharmaceuticals and textile dyeing, and its retort sterilizers are widely used to cook and sterilise retort pouch foods so they can be stored at room temperature.
The RCS retort range comes in three types. The hot water spray type uses four-way nozzles on each tray and indirect heating and cooling through a plate heat exchanger, holding only 1/6 to 1/7 of the water of a storage type and supporting rolling operation for pouches up to 3 kg. The hot water storage type preheats water for fast high-temperature cycles and offers a rotating option for large cans and viscous foods, while the steam type sterilises cans directly at lower running cost. A patented system handles air-containing containers, and options include F-value computers, recipe and data management, product temperature prediction, testing machines and automated tray handling lines.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Hot water spray retort: four-way nozzles per tray and indirect heating through a plate heat exchanger.
- Hot water storage retort: preheated water for fast cycles, with a rotating option for large cans.
- Steam retort: direct steam sterilisation for canned products at lower running cost.
- Air-containing container system: patented processing for pouches and packs with headspace air.
- Process control: F-value computer FVAC-VI, FAM recipe and data management and PASS temperature prediction.
- Testing and automation: pilot retort testers, automated tray handling, air-blow dehydrators and conveyors.
3. Potential application
- Ready-meal producers making retort-pouch pho, curry or braised dishes for convenience stores and export.
- Seafood and meat canneries switching to water-saving spray retorts with F-value documentation for export audits.
- Pet food manufacturers sterilising wet food pouches and trays.
4. Benefits
- Lower water and energy use: the spray type holds only 1/6 to 1/7 of the water of a storage retort, with optional hot water recovery.
- Uniform, validated sterilisation: temperature distribution was verified in an FDA-registered study using 24 sensor points.
- HACCP-ready operation: recipe recall and F-value calculation support documented, unmanned cycles.
- Local support: subsidiaries in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore serve Southeast Asian customers.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Retort pouch meals, curries, soups, sauces and pet food are expanding across Asia as consumers seek convenient shelf-stable products and exporters want to avoid cold-chain costs. Vietnamese food companies producing ready meals, canned seafood and processed meat are scaling up retort capacity to supply convenience stores and export markets.
