1. Technology overview
Altibase was founded on 26 November 1999 as a spin-off from ETRI, the South Korean government research institute, and has offices in China, Singapore and the United States. It provides a relational database for mission-critical systems in telecom, finance, manufacturing and the public sector that need very high transaction speed together with the capacity of disk storage, and reports more than 700 enterprise clients, including 19 Fortune Global 500 companies.
Altibase Enterprise DB, currently version 7.3, is a hybrid DBMS that keeps in-memory and disk-based tables in one engine and can place a single table across memory and disk through hybrid partitions. It supports standard SQL, ODBC and JDBC, replication with DDL synchronization for disaster recovery, coordinator-free sharding with online resharding, a Kafka connector, Kubernetes utilities and migration tools, with ALTIBASE 8 adding native JSON on the roadmap. Customers include SK Telecom, POSCO, Woori Bank, Shinhan Bank, Korea Exchange and Samsung Display.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Hybrid architecture: In-memory and disk tables in one engine with one SQL interface.
- Hybrid partitions: A single table can keep hot data in memory and older data on disk.
- Replication and DR: Native replication with DDL synchronization for disaster recovery.
- Coordinator-free sharding: Hash and range sharding with online node expansion and resharding.
- Standard connectivity: SQL, ODBC and JDBC compatibility plus a Kafka connector and DBeaver plugin.
- Migration and cloud tools: Migration center and Kubernetes utilities for moving off legacy databases.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese toll or transport operator can process vehicle transactions in memory with disaster recovery replication between sites. A securities company can run order transmission and matching databases with very low latency. A bank or telecom operator can migrate selected Oracle or SQL Server workloads to cut license costs, supported by local partner BNH.
4. Benefits
Operators can run latency-critical transactions in memory while keeping historical data on disk in the same database, avoiding a separate cache layer. The vendor reports up to 490 percent performance gain in V7.3 over the prior version, POSCO cites a database TCO reduction of more than 60 percent, and validation for the Vietnam toll project showed more than twice the processing performance of a conventional commercial DBMS. Migration tools help replace Oracle or SQL Server systems.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Governments and enterprises in Southeast Asia are digitizing toll collection, tax and payment systems that require high transaction throughput, while many also want to reduce license costs and dependence on Oracle or SQL Server. Altibase has recently won public-sector projects in Vietnam and Thailand and signed local partnerships, reflecting demand for alternative high-performance databases in the region.
6. Other information
Altibase was spun off from South Korea's ETRI in 1999 and has offices in China, Singapore and the US. It won the Grand Prize at the 12th Korea Software Product Quality Awards in 2025, a Thai land and building tax project in 2025 and the Vietnam Highway Toll Management System in 2026 with ETC Vietnam, and was recognized in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Operational DBMS in 2013 to 2015.
