1. Technology overview
Openchip is a European systems company established in Barcelona in 2021 as a joint venture between GTD Systems and Software Engineering and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). It reports more than 200 professionals, mostly in R&D, and aims to build full-stack European computing for AI and high-performance computing.
It designs RISC-V-based accelerators and systems on chip for vector and AI workloads, using chiplet-based, modular architectures with its own full-stack software, including an AI operating system for monolithic and agentic workloads. Security features include model attestation and secure enclaves, and its partners include NEC, imec, SUSE and Baya Systems.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- RISC-V accelerators: in-house designed accelerators and SoCs for vector and AI workloads.
- Chiplet architecture: modular, chiplet-based chip designs for scalable configurations.
- AI operating system: orchestration of monolithic and agentic workloads.
- Security: model attestation and secure enclaves.
- Edge SoCs: versatile SoCs for edge, IoT and home devices.
- BER10: sovereign chip announced on 30 July 2026, designed in Europe on open standards.
3. Potential application
A research institute or national computing centre can collaborate on RISC-V accelerators for HPC and AI. A telecom or cloud operator can evaluate sovereign AI infrastructure built on RISC-V. An IC design firm can explore joint development of chiplet-based SoCs for edge devices.
4. Benefits
Buyers get an open-standard RISC-V alternative designed in Europe, with control over hardware and software for sovereign AI and HPC. Modular chiplet architectures allow different configurations for edge, data centre and supercomputing. Built-in security features support model attestation and secure enclaves for sensitive workloads.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Governments and enterprises are pursuing sovereign compute and open instruction sets such as RISC-V to reduce dependence on a few suppliers. RISC-V and chiplet design interest is growing in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, where IC design houses and research institutes may seek partners for IP and co-development.
6. Other information
Established in Barcelona in 2021 with headquarters at Jordi Girona 29, Barcelona, and offices in Rome, Gdansk, Limerick and Karlsruhe. Funded partly under the EU IPCEI grant UNICO-IPCEI-2023-001. Partnerships include SUSE (June 2026), Baya Systems (June 2026), NEC and imec. Customers are not named on the site.
