1. Technology overview
GrainSense Ltd was established in late 2014 as a spin-off from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and began operations in 2016. The company is based in Oulu, Finland, and builds grain analysis instruments around a patented near-infrared (NIR) sensor that brings bench-scale spectroscopy into a compact format.
The product range includes GS Lab for laboratories, GS Combine and GS Silo for harvesting and storage, GS Go as a battery-powered handheld unit, and an OEM analyzer for integration into other makers' equipment. Results appear in seconds from a few kernels and can be stored in the cloud with GPS location. The site reports over 2,500 analyzers in use in more than 40 countries.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- GS Go handheld: battery-powered NIR analyzer measuring protein, moisture, oil and carbohydrate.
- GS Lab: lab-grade analyzer that works with a laptop.
- GS Combine and GS Silo: sensors for measurement during harvesting, processing and storage.
- OEM Analyzer: version for integration into other companies' moisture measurement systems.
- Cloud results: measurements saved with GPS location under a user account license.
- Algorithm updates: calibration improvements released in 2025 for grain quality analysis.
3. Potential application
Rice mills and traders in the Mekong Delta can check moisture and protein at purchase points. Feed manufacturers can test incoming maize and soybean meal at the gate. Cooperatives with silos can monitor stored grain and segregate lots.
4. Benefits
Handheld and lab units give protein, moisture, oil and carbohydrate readings in seconds from a few kernels. Buyers can time harvest, decide storage and segregation, and set selling prices from measured grain quality. Cloud storage with GPS location keeps a record per field or lot. A Vietnam distributor is listed, which shortens the route to local support.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Buyers of rice, maize and feed grain increasingly want quality measured at intake and in storage rather than judged by eye. Post-harvest losses and moisture-related spoilage are a concern in Vietnam's humid climate. Compact NIR devices lower the cost of testing at collection points and silos.
6. Other information
Spin-off from VTT, based in Oulu, Finland. In February 2025 it partnered with DICKEY-john on a white label product line and secured EU Eurostars funding with BoMill for a grain sorting system. Vietnam distributor listed: Cambut AG Electronics.
