1. Technology overview
Backbone is a Belgian startup founded in 2025 by Louis Opsomer, Siska Lannoo and Julien Steel. It provides an AI platform for food and beverage quality teams that replaces spreadsheets and emails with one live view of standards, audits, supplier data and customer requirements.
The platform scans documents in real time and maps them to standards such as BRCGS, IFS and FSSC 22000, plans corrective actions and certificate renewals, and runs AI agents for delegated work such as questionnaires, recipe change checks and production data assembly. It reads unstructured documents from day one and works with existing systems. Users include producers, ingredient and packaging suppliers and distributors.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Real-time scanning: Reads documents and maps them to standards as they change.
- Tasks and planning: Prioritised view of CAPAs, recurring tasks, certificate renewals and deadlines.
- AI agents: Handle questionnaires, recipe change checks and production data assembly.
- Reporting and insights: Non-conformity trends and management reports with sources.
- Standards coverage: BRCGS, IFS, FSSC 22000 and internal company standards.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese seafood or processed-food exporter could keep BRCGS or IFS audit documents and supplier certificates current in one system. A QA team could answer customer questionnaires faster with AI agents. An ingredient supplier could check recipe changes against specifications.
4. Benefits
Consolidates supplier documents, lab results and regulatory requirements in one place instead of scattered spreadsheets. Continuous mapping to BRCGS, IFS and FSSC 22000 helps teams stay audit-ready. AI agents take over repetitive tasks such as customer questionnaires and recipe change checks, and a task view prioritises CAPAs and certificate renewals.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Quality and compliance in food manufacturing is still managed largely through spreadsheets, emails and disconnected systems; the company estimates 80% of food producers still rely on them. Retailer and export audits under BRCGS, IFS and FSSC 22000 are common requirements for Vietnamese food exporters.
6. Other information
Founded 2025 in Belgium. Raised 4 million EUR pre-seed in September 2026 led by Pitchdrive with PROfounders Capital, Passion Capital, 100IN, Agristo and Darta. Operating in Belgium, the UK and the Netherlands; plans partnerships with certification bodies and ERP implementation partners.
