1. Technology overview
Captivate Technology is a Massey University spin-out based in Palmerston North, New Zealand. It combines adsorbent technology, process engineering and simulation to improve gas separation and carbon capture.
The core is MUF-16, a patented metal-organic framework selective for CO2 over nitrogen and methane, discovered in Professor Shane Telfer's lab. Products include Captivate Discovery for gas simulation, Feasibility, BIO and BIO+ for biomethane, and CARBON for high-purity CO2 capture, using pressure-swing adsorption. The company is moving into pilot deployments in biogas, geothermal and post-combustion capture.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- MUF-16 adsorbent: patented MOF with high CO2 selectivity.
- Captivate Discovery: gas simulation and performance assessment.
- Captivate Feasibility: techno-economic validation for a customer gas stream.
- Captivate BIO and BIO+: biomethane production from biogas.
- Captivate CARBON: high-purity CO2 capture.
3. Potential application
Livestock and food-processing plants in Vietnam could upgrade biogas to biomethane. Cement producers could assess CO2 capture feasibility with simulation. Geothermal or industrial operators could pilot gas separation.
4. Benefits
The adsorbent is stated to be selective for CO2 over nitrogen and methane. It is described as recyclable and tested in on-site trials in industrial settings. Simulation and feasibility offerings let buyers check economics before committing. Targeted sectors include cement, steel, natural gas, biomass and biogas.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Biogas upgrading and industrial CO2 capture need adsorbents that cut energy use versus amine scrubbing. Vietnam has growing biogas from livestock and agro-processing, and cement and steel emitters facing future carbon pricing.
