1. Technology overview
Hystar is a Norwegian hydrogen technology company founded around 2020 as a spin-off from research institute SINTEF, headquartered in Hovik, Norway. It was created to make green hydrogen production more efficient using proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, serving industrial users that need lower-cost, lower-energy hydrogen generation.
Its product range spans the EOS stack, the containerized VEGA system and the large-scale ORION plant, covering stack-level to gigawatt-scale hydrogen production. Hystar’s electrolysers have logged operating hours at its K-Lab pilot facility in Norway and are being developed with industrial partners, including a collaboration with BHEL in India.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. PEM electrolyser technology: derived from fuel-cell engineering for efficient hydrogen production.
2. Product range: EOS stack, VEGA containerized system and ORION large-scale plant.
3. High efficiency: VEGA system rated at 51.1 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen at full load.
4. Pilot-proven: operating hours logged at the K-Lab facility in Norway.
5. Scale-up plan: Project Sagitta targets gigawatt-scale manufacturing capacity.
