1. Technology overview
Particle is a US-based Internet of Things platform company founded in 2012 in San Francisco, originally as connected-lighting startup Spark before pivoting to a full IoT stack. It was built to remove the complexity of building and operating connected products end to end, from silicon to cloud, for businesses that lack in-house embedded and cellular expertise. In 2025 Particle was acquired by Digi International but continues to operate and ship products under the Particle brand.
The platform combines development boards, system-on-modules and gateways with Device OS edge firmware, over-the-air update tooling and a cloud layer that includes an event-driven message bus, serverless logic and a state-storage service called Ledger. Connectivity is delivered through EtherSIM embedded SIM cards spanning more than 350 cellular carriers worldwide, while the Console dashboard gives fleet operators a single view for monitoring and controlling deployed devices. Customers span asset tracking, HVAC, energy monitoring and light electric vehicle applications.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
