1. Technology overview

ForwardX Robotics is an autonomous mobile robot company founded in 2016, with offices in Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, Detroit, Chicago and Dusseldorf and a robot factory opened in 2022. It focuses on vision-based autonomy for busy brownfield warehouses and factories where people, forklifts and robots share the floor, and reports more than 4,500 AMRs deployed across over 250 facilities.

The Omni Fleet range includes the Flex, Max, Apex and Lynx series for assisted picking, material transport, pallet handling and line feeding. Flex robots carry up to 300 kg and combine four LiDARs, wide-angle and 3D cameras, with laser SLAM, visual and QR-code positioning. The f(x) Fleet Manager software assigns tasks and coordinates mixed fleets. Customers include 3PLs such as ITOCHU and SF DHL, plus manufacturers such as Chery and TCL.

2. Highlighted features & specifications

  • Flex series: modular AMRs carrying up to 300 kg with lifting and shelf modules for picking and transport.
  • Vision plus LiDAR: four LiDARs, wide-angle and 3D cameras for obstacle perception in mixed traffic.
  • Multiple positioning modes: laser SLAM, visual and floor or wall QR-code positioning.
  • Apex, Max and Lynx series: robots for pallets, heavier loads and factory line feeding.
  • f(x) Fleet Manager: assigns tasks and coordinates robot fleets across a site.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi as standard with optional Wi-Fi 6 and 4G/5G.

3. Potential application

A 3PL serving retail chains in Vietnam can deploy Flex robots for assisted picking and store replenishment orders. An automotive assembly plant can use the fleet for just-in-time delivery of parts to the line. An electronics factory in northern Vietnam can automate material transfers between warehouse and production floors.

4. Benefits

The company reports a 5–9 month return on investment, a 2–3 times increase in units per hour and up to 50% lower operating cost, with deployments in about four weeks. ITOCHU in southern China reports doubled per-picker throughput and an error rate falling from about 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000 with RFID-equipped AMRs. Robots-as-a-Service is offered to limit upfront spending.

6. Other information

First company established in the US in 2016, with AMR development from 2017 and engineering offices in Beijing. Total funding exceeds USD 100 million across angel to Series C rounds. Claims the first CE certification for vision-based AMRs (2020), was a major equipment supplier to JD Logistics, and has distributors in Europe and Australia.
