1. Technology overview
Standard Energy is a Korean battery company headquartered in Daejeon, started by PhDs from KAIST and MIT. It developed the Vanadium Ion Battery (VIB), a new cell format that is neither a lithium-ion nor a redox flow battery, to give energy storage systems high efficiency with no ignition risk.
The VIB uses a mostly water-based vanadium electrolyte with proprietary electrode, separator and current collector technologies, produced on an automated line called V-line. Products range from 208 Wh and 2.1-4.2 kWh units to 15 kWh and 75 kWh modules, combined with in-house BMS, EMS and PCS. Applications include building energy management, AI data centres, ultra-fast EV charging, UPS, grid forming and home storage.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Vanadium Ion Battery: proprietary cell combining vanadium electrolyte with new electrode and separator technologies.
- Modular range: units from 208 Wh up to 75 kWh modules at 855 V.
- Integrated control: in-house BMS, EMS and PCS configured per customer.
- Fire safety: no ignition under overcharge, short circuit, penetration or high temperature.
- Automated V-line: production process designed for scalable capacity.
- Multi-use: data centre UPS, EV charging, grid forming and building storage.
3. Potential application
Data centres in Vietnam can use VIB-based UPS and storage indoors where lithium fire rules are strict. Commercial buildings in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City can install storage in basements for peak shaving. EV charging hubs can buffer fast chargers without large grid upgrades.
4. Benefits
Based on internal test data, the company reports 96% energy efficiency, continuous 5C power without extra cooling and 99% capacity retention. The water-based electrolyte means no thermal runaway, allowing indoor and urban installation. High power output lets users install less capacity for the same application.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Fire incidents have made safety the main barrier for battery storage inside buildings and data centres. Demand from AI data centres, fast EV charging and renewable integration is pushing buyers in Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia to look at non-flammable chemistries alongside lithium-ion.
6. Other information
Headquartered in Daejeon with a Seoul office. Holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, NET and Inno-Biz certifications, with 301 patents filed.
