1. Technology overview
Nuvation Energy, part of Nuvation Research Corporation, designs battery management systems and energy storage design services for stationary storage. Its team has developed BMS technology since 2008 and shipped products in volume since 2015, with offices in Waterloo, Canada and Sunnyvale, United States.
The G5 and G5 Plus high-voltage BMS support battery stacks up to 1500 V DC with distributed cell interface modules for cell-level monitoring and continuous balancing, plus patented state-of-charge and state-of-health algorithms. A Multi-Stack Controller coordinates up to 16 stacks. The company also offers BESS and custom BMS design services for integrators and OEMs serving utility, C&I, data centre, microgrid, marine and second-life applications.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- G5 BMS: up to 1500 V DC with 24 or 36-channel cell interfaces, available now.
- G5 Plus BMS: up to 64 cell voltage and bus bar measurements for utility-scale stacks.
- Multi-Stack Controller: coordinated control and monitoring of up to 16 battery stacks.
- Battery algorithms: patented continuous balancing plus SoC and SoH estimation.
- Cybersecurity: encryption, authentication and firewalls built into every layer.
- Design services: BESS architecture, custom BMS design, testing and commercialisation support.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese battery pack assemblers and BESS integrators can adopt the G5 BMS to target export markets that require UL certification. Developers of second-life battery systems can use multi-chemistry BMS support. Data centre UPS suppliers can integrate high-voltage stacks with proven controls.
4. Benefits
Integrators get a field-proven BMS used in over 400 installations instead of building their own. Continuous balancing during operation maximises uptime and usable capacity. The BMS is designed for UL 1973 and CE compliance to support UL 9540 system certification, and it supports chemistries from lithium-ion to sodium-ion, zinc and nickel.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Battery storage makers increasingly buy a certified BMS instead of developing one, to shorten time to market and meet UL and IEC requirements. Supply-chain transparency and cybersecurity for grid-connected storage are becoming procurement criteria, while new chemistries such as sodium-ion need flexible battery management.
6. Other information
