1. Technology overview
Relectrify is a Melbourne-based battery technology company that grew out of early work on reusing end-of-life batteries. Its CellSwitch platform for distributed battery management and cell-level control aims to make battery storage cheaper and longer lasting by removing the limits set by the weakest cells.
The AC1 is a 250 kW / 1 MWh modular battery that generates grid-compliant AC power directly from the cells without a separate inverter. It monitors and independently controls nearly 4,000 cells, bypassing anomalous cells automatically, balancing energy continuously and using machine-learning algorithms for state of charge and state of health. It targets commercial and industrial energy users and smaller MW-scale utility projects, with remote monitoring and preventive maintenance from local teams.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Inverterless AC output: grid-compliant AC generated directly from battery cells.
- Cell-level control: independent monitoring and control of nearly 4,000 cells.
- Proactive safety: anomalous cells are bypassed automatically without stopping operation.
- Automatic balancing: energy balanced across cells and packs so no capacity is stranded.
- Real-time health data: machine-learning SoC and SoH down to each cell.
- Service model: remote monitoring, preventive maintenance and pack swapping support.
3. Potential application
Manufacturers in Vietnam with large daytime solar output can install an AC1 unit to cut evening peak tariffs. Cold-storage and logistics warehouses can use the battery for backup and demand charge reduction. Distribution-level solar farms can add MW-scale storage with fewer components.
4. Benefits
The company states the AC1 delivers 20% more energy over a 20-year life and degrades 40% less than a conventional system after 20 years of daily cycling. It reliably delivers 99% of available energy each cycle and measures state of charge with 99% accuracy. Removing the inverter makes the system more compact and cheaper to install and maintain.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Mid-sized energy users, described by ARENA as the missing middle of the energy transition, need storage that is simpler and cheaper than utility-scale systems. Cell-level control and longer usable life improve the business case for C&I batteries across Australia and Asia-Pacific markets with rising solar penetration.
6. Other information
Based in Melbourne, Australia. Received AUD 25 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency in October 2025 to deploy up to 100 MWh of AC1 systems, building on earlier ARENA funding for second-life battery work. Leadership includes CEO Jeff Renaud.
