1. Technology overview
Peak Energy is a US company headquartered in Burlingame, California that builds vertically integrated sodium-ion energy storage for utilities, independent power producers and AI data centres. Its aim is to lower the cost of grid storage by removing the cooling and maintenance burden of conventional lithium-ion BESS.
Grid Storage 1 uses NFPP sodium-ion cells in a fully passive architecture with no fans, chillers, fluid loops or fire-suppression hardware. Each enclosure holds 3.1 MWh usable energy at 750-1500 V with 4, 6 or 8-hour models and 96% DC round-trip efficiency. The system is drop-in compatible with standard inverters and EMS, and has operated on the US grid in Watkins, Colorado since August 2025.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Sodium-ion NFPP cells: stationary chemistry free of lithium supply constraints.
- Fully passive thermal design: no fans, compressors, chillers or fluid loops.
- 3.1 MWh enclosure: 775 kW at 4 hours with 4 to 8-hour duration options.
- Wide temperature range: operates from minus 40 to plus 55 degrees Celsius.
- Drop-in integration: standard EMS integration points and inverters.
- Compliance: UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, UN 38.3 and NFPA 855.
3. Potential application
Data centre developers in Vietnam could evaluate passive sodium-ion storage to firm grid supply without large cooling loads. Utility-scale solar plants could add 4 to 8-hour storage to reduce curtailment. Industrial parks could use low-maintenance storage at sites with limited technical staff.
4. Benefits
The company claims a total cost of ownership benefit of USD 75 per kWh in net present value through minimal operating costs. Passive thermal design uses 95% less auxiliary power and supports 99% guaranteed availability under service agreements. A 20-year design life with 7,300 guaranteed cycles requires no scheduled maintenance or augmentation.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Sodium-ion is emerging as an alternative to lithium iron phosphate for stationary storage because of abundant materials and better thermal stability. Fast-growing data centre loads and hot climates are pushing buyers toward storage with low auxiliary consumption and minimal maintenance, a relevant need in tropical Southeast Asia.
6. Other information
Headquartered in Burlingame, California, co-founded by CEO Landon Mossburg, formerly of Northvolt and Tesla. Closed a USD 108 million Series B in October 2026 led by GM Ventures with LG Technology Ventures and others, after a USD 55 million Series A led by Xora Innovation.
