1. Technology overview
Brill Power is an Oxford University spin-out established in 2016 that develops battery intelligence technology for stationary storage and electric vehicles. Its research found that many discarded batteries still hold most of their energy, and the company set out to replace legacy battery management and power conversion so that every cell is used to its full potential.
The platform combines BrillCore battery management with integrated power conversion, the hardware-agnostic BrillOS operating system with over-the-air updates, and BrillAnalytics cloud insights. BESA BP6X1 is a BMS+ with an integrated DC/DC converter for C&I and grid-scale storage, compatible with any chemistry. The HELIOS module packages the third-generation BMS+ with 314 Ah cells in a 52.25 kWh liquid-cooled unit for BESS OEMs.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- BMS+ with power conversion: cell-level current control with integrated DC/DC converter.
- Chemistry agnostic: works with any battery chemistry and system size.
- BrillOS: customisable firmware with safety settings and over-the-air updates.
- BrillAnalytics: cloud monitoring with bi-directional data flow.
- HELIOS module: 52.25 kWh, 1P52S, up to 1500 V, IP67 and liquid cooled.
- Accuracy and safety: plus or minus 2% SoC estimation and two-level disconnect.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese BESS assemblers could integrate HELIOS modules or BESA controllers to differentiate their C&I cabinets. Electric bus and motorbike operators could repurpose retired packs into stationary storage. Industrial sites could extend the life of existing battery systems through better cell management.
4. Benefits
The company reports up to 27% longer battery lifetime and up to 29% lower capex through less oversizing with BESA BP6X1. HELIOS can increase battery utilisation and reduce levelised cost of storage by up to 26%. Module-level redundancy isolates failed modules while the rack keeps running, raising availability.
5. Market trends & opportunities
BESS owners are looking for ways to extract more usable energy and longer life from cells, while second-life batteries from electric buses and cars need flexible management. Accurate state-of-charge data is also becoming important as storage assets trade in electricity markets.
6. Other information
Founded in 2016 and based in Oxford, UK. Raised a USD 10.5 million Series A in 2022 led by Legal & General Capital and Barclays. Acquired by Palmer Energy Technology (PETL) in August 2025; the Brill Power brand continues for module sales to third parties. HELIOS is manufactured by partner Lithium Valley.
