1. Technology overview
Esco Aster is a Singapore-based cGMP contract research, development and manufacturing organisation (CRDMO) and an independent subsidiary of Esco Lifesciences Group. In July 2021 it became the first company to receive a Singapore Food Agency food processing licence to manufacture cell-based cultivated meat, helping alternative protein startups move from lab to market without building their own plants.
Through its AsterMavors unit, it offers end-to-end food ingredient and food product development and manufacturing. Services cover adherent cell culture on its Tide Motion bioreactors, suspension culture at 500 L with a planned 2 x 6,000 L pilot plant, and precision fermentation at 8,000 L capacity using fungi, bacteria, algae or plant cells, with strain development and antibiotic resistance-free hosts. Clients are cultivated meat, cultivated fat and precision fermentation companies.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Tide Motion bioreactors: adherent cell culture with closed cell harvesting for cultivated meat and fat.
- Suspension culture: single-use bioreactors with microcarriers for biomass expansion.
- Precision fermentation: strain development, optimisation and scale-up for complementary proteins such as milk proteins.
- Hybrid products: combinations of plant-based ingredients with cultivated fat, fermented enzymes or flavourings.
- Downstream and analytics: processing and analytical control within designated food zones.
- Flexible business models: fee-for-service, milestone-based projects and partnered co-development.
3. Potential application
- Vietnamese food companies piloting cultivated meat or seafood products for export markets.
- Ingredient startups outsourcing precision fermentation scale-up of dairy proteins or enzymes.
- Research institutes in Vietnam partnering on cell line development and process validation.
4. Benefits
- Faster route to market: clients use licensed, certified capacity instead of building their own facilities.
- Food safety credentials: ISO 22000:2018 production since 2022 and the first FSSC 22000 certification for a cultivated meat facility in 2023.
- Scalable capacity: precision fermentation at 8,000 L and suspension culture from 500 L toward 6,000 L vessels.
- Capital efficiency: startups stay capex-light by relying on the company's biomanufacturing platforms.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Singapore has positioned itself as a regulatory and manufacturing hub for cultivated meat and precision fermentation in Asia. Most alternative protein startups lack capital for their own plants, creating demand for shared, food-grade contract manufacturing that can take products from pilot to commercial scale.
