1. Technology overview
Sateliot is a Barcelona-based company founded in 2018 that builds a low Earth orbit constellation to act as a 5G IoT telecom operator from space. It targets the large share of the planet that terrestrial mobile networks do not reach, for sectors such as logistics, mining, energy, agriculture and environmental monitoring.
The network uses NB-IoT over non-terrestrial networks standardized in 3GPP Release 17 and works as a roaming extension for mobile operators under GSMA guidelines, so standard devices can switch to satellite when out of coverage. Devices connect when a satellite passes overhead, and a store-and-forward scheme delivers messages of up to 200 bytes. Sateliot has launched six satellites, four of them in the August 2024 Revolution mission, and runs a certification program with chipset, module and device makers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- 5G NB-IoT NTN: satellite connectivity based on 3GPP Release 17.
- Operator roaming: works as a roaming partner for mobile operators following GSMA guidelines.
- Store and forward: delivers messages of up to 200 bytes when a satellite passes.
- LEO constellation: six satellites launched, with plans for more than 100.
- Device certification: program with Tier-1 and Tier-2 chipset, module and device makers.
- Standards alignment: works with 3GPP, GSMA, GCF and PTCRB bodies.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese mobile operator could add satellite NB-IoT roaming to its IoT offer for remote customers. Shipping and fishery companies can track containers and boats beyond coastal coverage. Environmental and forestry agencies' contractors can collect sensor data from forests, rivers and border areas.
4. Benefits
Standard NB-IoT devices gain satellite coverage through roaming, without a separate satellite terminal. Mobile operators can sell global IoT coverage to their enterprise customers under existing roaming models. The company reports 270 million EUR in contracts with more than 400 clients in 50 countries, a sign of an active partner ecosystem.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Cellular IoT is converging with satellite through 3GPP NTN standards, letting operators offer coverage everywhere with one SIM. Investors and governments in Europe are funding sovereign satellite IoT networks. Operators in Southeast Asia, with many islands and remote areas, are natural roaming partners for such services.
6. Other information
Founded in 2018 and based in Barcelona, Spain; CEO Jaume Sanpera. Closed a 70 million EUR Series B in March 2025, including 30 million EUR debt from the European Investment Bank. Strategic shareholders include Indra, Cellnex and SEPIDES; targets 1 billion EUR revenue by 2030.
