1. Technology overview
Ubiik is a Taiwanese company founded in 2016 to design and develop Weightless LPWAN technologies and IoT solutions, with offices in Taipei, Hsinchu, Tokyo, Phoenix, Paris, Christchurch and Burnaby. It began with Weightless devices for industrial and national-scale IoT and has grown into a provider of private LTE networks and smart metering infrastructure for utilities, public safety, defense and transportation.
The portfolio now covers protocols, end devices, base stations and cloud services for both Weightless and 3GPP NB-IoT and LTE-M. Products include smart metering and AMI systems, the freeRAN LTE-M base station, a dual-spectrum private LTE base station, the Maverick 220 high-power module, MimoLink radios from its 2023 acquisition of Mimomax Wireless, the Zephyr SCADA radio and the Pyxis Duo LTE router. Taipower is its main AMI customer, with over 2 million smart meters under contract.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Weightless LPWAN: sub-1GHz network for wide-area sensor and meter coverage.
- Smart metering and AMI: end-to-end advanced metering infrastructure for utilities.
- Private LTE: dual-spectrum base stations and the freeRAN LTE-M base station.
- Maverick 220 module: high-power LTE-M and NB-IoT module for meters and devices.
- MimoLink and Zephyr radios: backhaul and multipoint SCADA radio links.
- Pyxis Duo router: three-band FCC-certified LTE router for field sites.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese power corporation can deploy an AMI network for remote reading of electricity meters. A water supply company can use NB-IoT or Weightless water meters to detect leaks and reduce non-revenue water. Industrial parks can build private LTE networks for substations, SCADA and security.
4. Benefits
Utilities get a complete AMI stack, from meter modules to base stations and cloud, from one vendor. Support for both Weightless and 3GPP LTE-M or NB-IoT lets operators choose private or public network models. The solution is proven at national scale, with more than 1 million smart meters deployed by 2024 and over 2 million under contract with Taipower. Interoperability with Landis+Gyr Revelo meters eases integration.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Utilities across Asia are rolling out smart meters and need dedicated, reliable networks for them, often on private LTE or LPWAN spectrum. Grid modernisation and renewable integration increase the need for SCADA and distribution automation links. Vietnam's power and water companies are expanding remote meter reading programs.
6. Other information
