1. Technology overview
SkyCool Systems is a Mountain View, California company that grew out of radiative cooling research at Stanford, where its team published one of the most cited papers on passive daytime radiative cooling. It addresses the energy use, noise, water consumption and refrigerant issues of conventional condensers and the heat load that roofs place on buildings.
Its optical film reflects sunlight and radiates heat to the cold sky and space 24 hours a day. SkyCool Panel is a modular heat rejection panel with a closed water/glycol loop that works with HFC, CO2 and chilled water systems, from convenience store refrigeration to data centre campuses. SkyCool Roof is a roll-on film for TPO, modified bitumen, concrete and metal roofs, also supplied pre-applied by roof manufacturers. Customers include grocery retailers, cold chain, warehouses and data centres.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Radiative cooling film: optical film that sheds heat to the sky day and night.
- SkyCool Panel: modular heat rejection panels with a closed water/glycol loop.
- System compatibility: works with HFC, CO2 and water/glycol refrigeration and chiller systems.
- SkyCool Roof: roll-on film for retrofit TPO, modbit, concrete and metal roofs.
- Pre-applied roofing: new roof substrates with SkyCool film, warranted by roof manufacturers.
- US manufacturing: panel, roof and film products made in the USA.
3. Potential application
Supermarket and cold storage operators in Vietnam can add SkyCool Panels to refrigeration systems to reduce condenser energy during hot seasons. Data centre developers can use panel arrays to supplement chillers. Logistics warehouses and factories with metal roofs can test SkyCool Roof film to reduce indoor heat without installing new HVAC.
4. Benefits
SkyCool Panels have no fans or moving parts, use no ongoing water and need only pump energy, with a 15-year life and quiet operation. They keep performing even at zero temperature difference, helping chillers and CO2 refrigeration on the hottest days. SkyCool Roof stays cooler than ambient air and up to 70°F cooler than a basic roof, keeping interiors on average 7°F cooler and reducing the need for HVAC and insulation.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Refrigerant phase-downs, rising electricity costs and the rapid growth of AI data centres are pushing operators toward heat rejection that uses less energy and water. Hot Southeast Asian markets, including Vietnam, are expanding cold storage, supermarkets and data centres, where reducing condenser load and roof heat gain directly lowers operating costs.
6. Other information
