1. Technology overview
Gas Sensing Solutions Ltd (GSS) was founded in 2006 and is based in Cumbernauld, Scotland, UK. It designs and manufactures solid-state CO2 and methane sensors for OEMs that need accurate gas measurement with very low power draw or very fast response, in sectors from building ventilation to medical devices and aerospace.
Its patented NDIR sensors use a proprietary mid-infrared LED and photodiode platform grown in-house by molecular beam epitaxy, instead of the hot filament lamps used in conventional NDIR sensors. The range is organised into low-power CozIR sensors for battery IoT devices, wide-range ExplorIR sensors for harsh or unstable environments, and high-speed SprintIR sensors for breath and process monitoring. Customers are equipment manufacturers worldwide, supported by ISO 9001-certified processes.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- CozIR low-power series: ultra-low-power CO2 sensors for battery-operated IoT and air quality monitors.
- CozIR-LP Series 2: adds temperature and humidity sensing to CO2 measurement in one device.
- ExplorIR wide-range series: CO2 sensing for harsh, rapidly changing or unstable environments.
- SprintIR high-speed series: up to 50 readings per second for breath, process and packaging monitoring.
- Mid-IR LED platform: patented solid-state LED and photodiode grown in-house by molecular beam epitaxy.
- OEM support: sensors tailored to customers' integration and power requirements under ISO 9001 processes.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese HVAC and building automation integrators can use CozIR sensors in battery-powered classroom and office CO2 monitors. Food exporters can check gas mixtures in modified-atmosphere packaging and cold storage. Greenhouse and mushroom farms can control CO2 enrichment, and medical device makers can add fast capnography sensing.
4. Benefits
LED-based sensing uses far less power than filament NDIR, so wireless CO2 monitors can run for long periods on batteries. Solid-state sources have no moving parts or hot filaments, giving faster response and greater durability. The SprintIR-R delivers 50 readings per second at 70 ppm accuracy for fast-changing gas streams. In-house epitaxy lets GSS tune LED characteristics to specific applications.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Ventilation and indoor air quality rules for schools, offices and hospitals are driving demand for CO2 sensors in HVAC and wireless monitors, while modified-atmosphere packaging, greenhouses and medical devices need fast, stable measurement. In Southeast Asia, energy-efficient buildings, cold-chain logistics and controlled agriculture are expanding, creating demand for low-power sensors that can be built into locally assembled equipment.
