1. Technology overview
Altris is a Swedish sodium-ion battery company founded in 2017 in Uppsala by Ronnie Mogensen, Reza Younesi and William Brant after research at Uppsala University's Angstrom Advanced Battery Centre. It addresses dependence on lithium, cobalt and nickel by building batteries from abundant iron and sodium with a European supply chain.
Its core material is Prussian White cathode active material with 160 mAh/g capacity, made from iron and sodium with EU-sourced precursors and water-based processing without NMP solvents. The CAM is produced at an industrial facility in Kolin, Czechia, with partner Draslovka, and the company also offers P-Series high-rate cells and E-Series endurance cells from its Uppsala pilot line. Customers and partners include battery makers, automotive OEMs, grid storage providers and defence suppliers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Prussian White CAM: iron and sodium based cathode with 160 mAh/g capacity.
- Critical-mineral free: no cobalt, nickel or manganese in the chemistry.
- Water-based process: no NMP or toxic solvents in cathode manufacturing.
- Industrial supply: CAM produced in Kolin, Czechia, with process parameters transferable to partner lines.
- Cell portfolio: P-Series high-rate cells and E-Series endurance cells above 160 Wh/kg.
- Business models: direct material offtake, technology licensing and joint development.
3. Potential application
Battery cell and pack makers in Vietnam could license the Prussian White process or buy CAM to develop sodium-ion cells for energy storage systems. Telecom operators and solar developers could evaluate sodium-ion packs for backup and storage without cobalt or nickel. Automotive suppliers could test low-voltage sodium-ion modules as lead-acid replacements.
4. Benefits
The cathode delivers 160 mAh/g and enables cells above 160 Wh/kg, which the company says approaches LFP territory, while avoiding cobalt, nickel and manganese. Water-based processing lowers facility cost and eases permitting. E-Series cells built on the material are specified for more than 8,000 cycles and operation down to -40 C, and low-voltage packs serve as drop-in lead-acid replacements.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Sodium-ion batteries are moving into commercial use for stationary storage, low-voltage automotive systems and cold-climate applications as buyers look to diversify away from lithium and nickel supply risks. In Southeast Asia, where grid storage, two-wheelers and telecom backup are expanding, cheaper and safer chemistries made from abundant materials are drawing attention from cell makers and integrators.
