Metalenz Polar ID Meta-Optic Face Authentication

Metalenz is a Boston-based optics company founded in 2016 by Rob Devlin and Federico Capasso, built on metasurface research from the Capasso Lab at Harvard University, for which it holds an exclusive worldwide licence. Metasurfaces are flat optics made in semiconductor foundries that can replace stacks of conventional lenses and control light intensity, phase and polarisation.

Polar ID is its full-system face authentication solution for smartphones. A polarisation-sensitive meta-optic integrated directly on an image sensor captures material and contour information from a single image, and algorithms decide whether the face is a real, enrolled user. UMC produces the meta-optic layer on its 40 nm process with wafer-on-wafer bonding, and the solution has been demonstrated on Snapdragon reference platforms. Customers are phone OEMs and module makers; the company says more than 140 million of its optics are already in consumer devices.

Smartphone and camera module manufacturers in Vietnam can evaluate Polar ID for secure face unlock in new Android models. Banks and e-wallets can work with device partners on payment-grade biometric login. Makers of smart locks, access control terminals and laptops can adopt compact meta-optic sensing.

Phone makers can offer payment-grade face unlock with a single compact module instead of complex structured-light systems, cutting cost and component count. Polarisation data helps distinguish real faces from photos and masks. The latest version works under the display, removing the need for a large notch. Foundry production on 12-inch wafers at UMC supports high-volume supply.

Mobile payments and banking apps are raising demand for strong biometric authentication on mid-range Android phones, where structured-light face unlock has been too costly. Optics are also moving into semiconductor fabs, which suits Asian foundries and module makers. Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, is a major smartphone assembly base and a fast-growing mobile payments market.
